Just noticed this because AoE quoted it.... (Sounds like a tourist rofl)
#1 ignore all of that shit (except the shady ticket man) if you are walking through anywhere but the ghetto. NYC is no different than any other large city, and is actually safer than most imo. You need to take basic precautions, but you don't have to run around like a paranoid moron.
#2 People from NYC aren't unfriendly, they have things to do and don't have time to give retarded tourists directions or information. Keep in mind the people living there almost always have mass transit as their sole means of transportation... and as such are running back and forth to catch the scheduled train or bus they need.
Like I told a dude visiting from North Carolina just a few days ago. Just use common sense and don't be a jackass and you'll be fine in NYC. Last time I had an issue in the city was like when I was 13 and lived in the South Bronx.
NYC is safer than Newburgh.
Real talk.
Aside from the one I just mentioned in queens, theres one on/near madison/29th in the city. Its combined with some other shop I don't care for. They exist in NY I go to them all the time. >_>
As for unfriendly, I had a guy give me a big sob story about having no money and kids in the car and he really really wanted to use my credit card to get gas money or something. As a NYer I'll give directions (if I know them) but I'm not putting myself in any risk to help strangers.
lol it's pretty clear you've never lived outside of home
Here's a list off the top of my head for expenses:
Rent
Phone
Gas
Electric
Laundry
Metrocard
Food/household items ( incl. all the shit you need buy at the drugstore)
This is assuming you are going in with ZERO debt/other financial obligations (credit cards, student loans etc)
Not to mention you will be taxed additionally just because of living within the New York City limits.
You're correct that you'll never be 100% prepared but there are definitely degrees of unpreparedness. The idea of saving ANY money when you make that much (or that little) is in a word: (sorry) laughable.
On the more important note of Taco Bell, I had to go up to Westchester to get me some when I lived in the BronxHowever when I was an undergrad at NYU there used to be one on Broadway and W. 4th... no idea if it still exists however.
Assuming you're just subleasing a room, gas/electric will be covered in what you pay for rent. Laundry/personal shit would basically tap you clean along with food at 9/hr though. When I worked for 10/hr in some retail pharmacy I basically had enough to go out to one tournament a month, tops.
All the good food spots in NYC and dudes are worried about where Taco Bell is.![]()
Seriously, all this Taco Bell talk is boggling my mind. NYC isn't quite like LA with their taco trucks, but there are definitely much better options for tacos/burritos than Taco Bell. I personally hit up one of the 3 El Rey del Sabour carts at least once a week for lunch.
I understand getting a craving, but you guys are talking like Taco Bell is like the shit or something.
Mexican cravings and Taco Bell cravings are not the same thing!
Only thing Taco Bell does for me is make me angry that I spent like 10 bucks on food that doesn't even make me full when I can go a Chinese Restaurant that makes spanish food and get a damn near full course meal for 5 bucks.
Bullshit. There are McDonalds in the city that I've seen with the two Filet O' Fish special. Granted, they were for $4 instead of the $3 that other places have, but places that don't have the special are like $3 per sandwich.
As for the rest of their menu, I can't say since I only give a shit about fish filets
I am immensely glad this topic is mostly about food.
You have chinese people making mexican food, and Mexicans running Italian pizza places. SHIT IS BIZARRO WORLD.
