I do hope they change their mind on the subcontroller though, and instead give it the ball and the motion capabilities as well, that way I could dual-wield stuff without the need for a spare Move. It makes no sense to have the three possible control set ups when it could just be two instead. I get the feeling some games are going to employ a DualShock+Move setup. Hold the dualshock in one hand (either or), and move in the other. Wouldn't really be ergonomic, but the one hand on a dualshock has access to one analog, 4 face buttons (or d-pad), and two shoulder buttons.
Move itself will probably be around $50 I would guess.

And the subcontroller is exactly the same as having the Dualshock, it's just more comfortable. I'm pretty sure you don't NEED the subcontroller, you can just use the DS3 if it isn't too uncomfortable for you. I said they should have had a ball on the end of the subcontroller too, but the other problem is that the subcontroller has no motion detection inside it, no gyroscopes, no accelerometers etc, so it would only be able to detect where it is on the PS Eye.

Yeah because the average consumer has a few million dollars to spend on that shit.

I've used a number of prototypes of this technology - my best friend is the lead programmer for "Gladiator Duel" - the sword and shield game they show during the demos. I've gone to his office a few times over the past 1.5 years to test out what they've been doing, and I've played all the games in the "Sports Champions" lineup.

It is -very- precise, and good developers could make a very good game (especially with the analog left stick controller and the glowing orb right stick) but it will just be up to their creativity.

It sucks that there's no analog stick on the right hand, the thing is designed too much for casuals. I'm trying to get him to convince his boss to get a Star Wars license, you could make a badass Jedi game with this. Running around with the analog, using the orb to point at the screen to shoot a pistol and grab stuff with the force, and of course swing your lightsaber around.

I wanna grab some stormtroopers, pull them to me and then baseball swing cut them in half with a lightsaber. Shit would be so cash.

If Sony makes a good Star Wars game using motion controls before nintendo does...it's gonna be lolworthy.

It makes sense to me because I see the subcontroller/nunc as serving a different purpose/usage than just an actual motion controller (A.Stick, D-pad being on it, etc) for say FPS and TPS games where you need to move the character. Yes, they could put an analog stick with a motion controller, but don't you think that would complicate it a little bit too much (move char, do motion with it, etc, + complicate the design where they put X, O... buttons -and- analog stick along with a d-pad, make two versions of a motion controller to fit all of that? I may sound stupid, but that sounds overdoing it to me, makes it more expensive and I know it will be hard for casual players, so they probably needed to see it from all points. I do hate the casual stuff though so meh.)

As for the dual shock + move setup, they showed that a while ago before making the subcontroller, you can probably find it if you look around. It might still be usable, which could save you some money there.

Oh and I found this video, kinda goes against the article's title , even though that was an early concept for the PS2. Same guy was at E3 last year iirc. (Apparently, they have been working on this stuff as far as 1998 or 1999 iirc.)

    P.S. Don't make fun of the double 'iirc' ; ;

Edit: Found out his name: Dr.Richard Marks

Another Edit: Positive experience using the Move with Socom4, guess it might be comparable to using a keyboard and mouse on FPS/TPS games afterall?

To differentiate itself from the Wii controller . I assume that's the reciever that connects it to the camera.

The colored ball appears to work in a motion-capture ability.

You know when they show MC being done, and the person in question is covered with the little white balls... I would assume that's what it's there for. So the eye can pick up where the controller is, etc.

Basically this. That's what the camera is tracking and how it has such good control. In contrast, the Wii Motion Plus has no idea if the controller is at shoulder height, over your head or at your ankles. It only tracks relative position, not absolute like Playstation Move.

Here's the developer diary my best friend Andrew Jepsen is in, he's the blond kid talking about Gladiator Duel.

I'm taking it the ideal scenario is to have the ball within view of the Eye at all times. If that's the case I'm going to have to reposition my desk layout later this year since I use my PS3 on the same desk/monitor as my PC. >.>

At least this means my Eye will actually get some fucking use, and perhaps encourage more devs to use the thing since it'll have a larger install base later in the year when this all comes out.
(Seriously. I bought the Eye for Burnout Paradise, and have since only bought about two other games that make use of it out of the 40 some games I own)

Basically yes. If it can't see the ball, it still has a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, so it can temporarily extrapolate absolute position, but it will go out of whack quickly if it can't see the ball for an extended period of time.

I would have hated being part of the group that had to program the math for all that shit while keeping the overhead as low as possible.

I get the feeling game devs will be dedicating one SPU to doing the image recognition algorithms on the webcam feedback without hampering the speed of the game much. I don't see it being as accurate as the Wii remote's IR sensor though in terms of aiming (rather than motions), there's only so much info the Eye can read at 640x480 resolution (or 320x240 if the devs want to read the detail at 120fps)

I heard they took a few smart shortcuts. The colors on the ball, for example, I thought were retarded until I found out that it's lit using the least present color in your background so the camera can more easily track where the wand is.

The beauty of that 'shortcut' is that the camera should have no problem tracking the ball in all lighting scenarios, even with the lights out. No more of that large problem the eye-toy had where optimal lighting conditions were a necessity.

Being a Wii owner, all I can say is, I hope this doesn't mean there'll be loads of shovelware casual shit on my PS3. Hopefully the licensing costs of the PS3 will deter that.

Doesn't bother me. As long as Sony keeps their strong first party studios and keeps them pumping out the AAA titles, the rest can port over as much shovelware as they want from the Wii for the casuals.

If they take Nintendo path and start catering mostly to the casuals then fuck them. But yeah, the difficulty of the PS3 architecture and the costs will hopefully keep most of them away.

As much as I loved the Ratchet games, I hated the Sixaxis-based weapons. My brain does not function with moving my character around while tilting the controller around to aim the tornado/electricity-ball-thing/etc. I would hope any Move-based additions wouldn't be as gimmicky.
