    Deadly Premonition

    Anyone pick this up?

It's a survival horror budget release that I'd not heard of until recently and looks to be quite the sleeper hit on the interwebs. Looking to see if it's all it's made out to be.

360 exclusive in the West though PS3 chaps can import an Asian (not Japanese) version which has an English Track.

Deadly Premonition is a third-person survival horror action game which puts players in the role of the intuitive FBI Agent Francis York Morgan. In the process of investigating a murder, players will examine a series of interlocking mysteries in a remote rural town and will encounter an array of complex characters pivotal to the unraveling of the storyline's mystery. Suspenseful action sequences will force players to make strategic moves, gliding by enemies in the shadows or engaging them with long-range weapons or hand-to-hand melee combat. From the unparalleled atmosphere, music and mysterious storyline to driving vehicles and exploring the entire town, Deadly Premonition will offer players a unique and haunting interactive gaming experience unlike any other.

This game is so bad, it's not just become good. It's pretty close to perfect.

Access Games went above and beyond in creating Deadly Premonition, and frankly, it disgusts me knowing that the game was kicked out the door at a $20 super-budget price point.

And a wee Destructoid article on why it beats out Heavy Rain:

I have it, been having a lot of fun with it. The graphics and voice acting are BAD, but seemingly purposely so. The whole thing reeks of Twin Peaks, if that's your thing... kinda like Twin Peaks meets Shenmue meets Silent Hill, I guess?

There's a massive town to explore and loads of missions/sidequests to do, but the best part is the game's wacky and zany sense of humor. There's just a whole lot of random shit going on in the town, and the main character (who suffers from multiple personality disorder and can see the future in his coffee) is probably just as weird as the town's inhabitants.

For 20 bucks you really can't go wrong, especially if you're the kind of person that likes to watch bad movies and make fun of them. You get a crapload of content for your money. Don't expect the best game ever, but the game is certainly charming enough to keep you playing if you can get through the first hour or so.

edit: for an idea on the humor, look at the clip halfway down the last link you posted, under the heading "F...K... in the coffee"

I don't have a system for it but I watched the "entire" playthrough on youtube (long two days)

I have to say it is quite amazing and easily a cult classic, so bad it is good. However, the last parts of the game are a bit confusing leaving me with several questions in mind.

All the music being played during conversations is quite hilarious. York talking about his past cases and talking to Zach about past movies while driving... XD how I wish I could've played it

    MISTER FRANCIS YORK MORGAN

So I played this game. I am very ambivalent about it. Well, it is quite clear that it is trash. 2/5. However, it is incredibly charming and I don't really regret playing it in the its entirety - well I would probably be happier if I didn't play out the final chapters lol. I guess I should break this down since this thread is so damn short. Let's go over the evidence shall we, Zach?

I played this game on hard and man... it was fucking easy. I seriously regret playing on hard because I get the feeling all they did was raise the health of the enemies... which did nothing but make the PAINFULLY long "shadow" sequences even longer. I can't really imagine the game being any easier, so play on easy. I mean you can pretty much kill anything(and everything in the room) standing still pumping out shots from your infinite bullet guns(you START with one, can get more via subquests - ammo is plentiful and can be bought anyway). A "hard" scenario would be the ones where you had to move your body 5 feet away for some space. Of course you could outrun anything in this game which you weren't forced to fight. My deaths were mostly from QTEs and I think 2-3 from the "bosses" which they are not many of.

Beyond the easiness, the "combat" sections where you fight LEGIONS of ghosts ("mysterious shadows") are just flat-out boring. AND LONG. I was bored of them by the second time you enter this purple smoke world and the game simply kept throwing you into them towards the end. And these levels were so repetitive. The Raincoat Killer? When you've run into him once(well, lets say twice) you basically know how every single encounter with him will play out because they all play out the same way and it happens at least once in every major level. By the third "shadow" world level you will instantly know the pattern that "if I walk into a big building it is going to be another one of these fucking grinds. If not now, later." That's a minor spoiler, but I just saved you some time pointing out the obvious.

And here are some minor spoilers concerning the type of enemies you fight: You basically fight the same grunts you do in the first mission til the end of the game. Two changes: At some point some of them will get guns which takes 8? seconds to charge up and are easily interrupted and you also fight some bitches right out of the "The Ring". At first these seem kind of scary, but they are actually easier than normal enemies. They are just invincible 95% of the time and take FOREVER to kill. (and the game at some point makes you fight like... 6 in a row(one on one of course). hahaha OH GOD.)

Oh yes, this is one of those games that just doesn't know when to end. Look, I don't mind extending the story - more bosses and cutscenes and shit, but THREE MORE "DUNGEONS" FROM THE POINT WHERE I THOUGHT I WAS DONE? I simply can't express how much I hate myself for beating the final chapters in one sitting thinking I was 30 minutes away from the end.

And to get the last of this stuff out the way, the bosses fucking sucked. Storyline-wise, how they looked(oh god, wtf), how they fought, how much health they had on hard mode compared to how many moves they would do - ALL CRAP.

So basically anything you were forced to use your gun, this game was a bit like torture. And the rest of the game simply doesn't make up for it. This is why the game is a bad one overall.

Now the parts I liked were when you simply drove around and talked to people. This game has a Shenmue-like system where each of the important NPCs(you can't interact with anyone but the cast of something like 15-20 people) has a schedule they follow. When paired with the intriguing storyline and the AWESOME protagonist, I really loved it. There are side-quests and stuff and they seemed to be important, but they are not. Still, when I thought I could change the pace of the investigation I was very excited about doing them. (Like when I found some secrets about the murder victim and it linked her with another character who seemed important but hadn't been introduced yet in the main storyline and I was doing a subquests with her and etc - but in the end, it didn't matter).

But to bring it back to reality: the driving was kind of tedious after a point. It was bearable though, but I couldn't play this game again because of it. In GTA you can switch many stations with many songs, but in this game... with very few exceptions during missions... there is one fucking song for when you drive. And when you are not in those extremely boring shadow missions(which also have... one song... when you hear that song during the loading screen you know the next 15-30 minutes of your life will put you to sleep) you are spending almost all your time driving.

The storyline gets you hooked like any good mystery TV show would. I liked the characters - both major and minor. However after a certain point very late in the game, it pretty goes "Alright, fuck this shit." Seriously what the fuck? And no I am not talking about the secret behind the red room, York, and etc, I love that kind of shit. I am talking about everything else. It was just too much. I quickly lost interest in what was going on. The game does have some genuine good plot twists, but man - maybe too many? And maybe some of those plot twists twist too much. So yeah, I am basically babbling here because I don't want to spoil shit. So to repeat myself: The characters are a lot of fun and the plot was addictive until it soured out at the end. And while the subquests are filler, some of them do tell you some cool stuff about the characters. I'd do them, some just for laughs.

(Btw this is one of those games where you can be easily locked out of completing a subquest. Rule of thumb - complete the quests for every important character if possible. Unfortunately that often isn't enough. A lot of places will be closed / people will be home and you won't be able to visit them in some cases. You are sort of timed in this game, not that it is a problem most of the time.)

But lets just point out the best thing about this game: The York/Zach dynamic. I can't get enough York talking to his imaginary friend of sorts. And he does it best while driving in the car. He loves talking about old movies, old brutal serial killer cases, how they both like Emily and are willing to compete for her. Good times. Also York being a complete dick(mostly in the beginning) is equally entertaining. And with lines like "the sinner's sandwich" and "It's in the coffee!" - WITH THAT FUCKING SMILE LOL. This game is worth youtubing at least.

EDIT: I wouldn't call the voice acting bad at all. At worst it is average. York is gold throughout the entire thing.

This was a nice rant, but I need to wrap this up. Graphics and music. The graphics suck. Really bad. It is basically a late Xbox game with "next-gen" models. It is a shame because they put a lot of heart in recreating a small midwestern american town. It just comes off a little weird. The music is actually pretty good, but extremely repetitive. The best song is the main theme("Woods and the Goddess"?). At first it plays whenever you enter a new place, but then it starts playing at key moments during cutscenes and well, the effect is felt. Other than that the "production values" on this game are as bad as they say. The funniest quality is when "scare music" plays earlier than what was suppose to scare you appears on screen. Happened at least 5 times. Anyway, tired, don't mind the typos.

    SO SAYS MISTER STEWARD

    PREVIOUSLY DURING THE INVESTIGATION*

    http://www.gamasutra.com/view/featur...love_you__.php

Everyone I've talked to feels that the "real" game takes place during the exploration/mystery sequences, and that the shooting areas are bits you have to simply get through to get back to the fun part of the game (though the profiling aspect is enjoyable). How do you feel about that statement?

SWERY: Actually, I feel exactly the same.

It's a little bit embarrassing, but the shooting areas were the last things that we started to work on and I have to reckon that I should have paid more attention to this part.

Actually, this part wasn't even in the original concept and after checking with my staff and many people, I eventually realized that it was necessary.
*: Shit, did I do this right?

Glad to see someone else played this since I only saw the whole playthrough online (lack of system etc).

Last chapter(s) were the only "true" disappointing parts because I didn't understand what happened honestly lol...
    Spoiler: show
What exactly was the villian (forgot his name atm)? Shooting him before the final fight in the 3 choice portion (shoot yourself, the girl, or the guy) did nothing and Zack resets the whole thing. The second to last portion of the fight where you're going DOWN stairs until you reach the last fight... which is ON TOP of a building? lol you go down to reach up? You beat the last fight and he falls into a sea but this whole time you were on top of a small building with no water mass anywhere...

I was assuming the whole thing was an inner hallucination of sorts--or aliens but I don't want to say that. Or even wtf those zombie things you kept seeing were. The girl could see them that point you controlled her so they can't truely be hallucinations...

i definitely agree that the combat is the weakest point, although the charm of this game makes you wonder whether or not some of the more questionable design choices (graphics, combat, story) were in fact intentional, in which case the game in its entirety becomes almost satirical.

I definitely enjoy the non-combat sections a LOT more. The whole vibe of the game is really what pulls you in, the sort of twin peaks homage thing, but the way it meshes so well with the somewhat eerie atmosphere afforded by npc responses/behavior and the fact that video games of this type typically have awkward dialogue makes it even more absurd, but captivating at the same time.

I guess my point is that even though this game is terrible (whether or it's intentional or not) there is still something that really makes you want to keep playing.

God damn, I was thinking that would have never happened, given that PS3 Asian release (with full English/subtitles to boot) never made it over.

Something for me to look forward to that isn't in a state of limbo.

This is Swery, Director at Access Games.

It’s already been 2 months since my last blog update.
    Sorry I didn’t update sooner...

My last update was about my adventures in Boston, and I wanted my next post to be about my visit to Germany, France and England for gamescom 2012 in August, but before I knew it, summer had passed and now it’s chilly in the morning and evening again... in other words: autumn.

It’s the Director’s Cut of Deadly Premonition (Red Seeds Profile)!
It’s been over half a year since the first rumors of the project.
Sorry I had to keep you waiting for this long.

I hardly ever update, I’m really slow at making games, you have to wait ages before I reply to interviews or tweets; I’m just generally late with EVERYTHING, even when going to sleep at night.

But to make up for all of this, I wrote this post for you.

The Director’s Cut is currently in production and we’re aiming for a worldwide release, starting in Europe.
Moreover, contrary to the original, it’s being released on PS3.

This means that, contrary to the 2-year-old original, the game will now be in full HD.
Other things have been changed as well, such as the player controls etc.
The list of improvements counts over 100 items!

It’s very easy to control now, so even people who didn’t play the original should have no doubts about taking the plunge this time.

Of course there are new elements as well, such as extra scenarios and PlayStation Move support, so people who already completed the game before will find plenty of new stuff to like as well.

In any case, we tried to create this Director’s Cut in such a way that the appearance of the game world would be maintained, while also being accessible to newcomers and old fans.

I’ve been especially picky about pouring the thoughts and feelings I’ve experienced since the release of the original into this game in such a way that it really makes you feel that 2 years have passed since then.

I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether I succeeded or failed.

Please let me know your thoughts once you play the game!

What with a brand new PS3 model having recently been released, this is the perfect opportunity for you to check out this highly unusual game.

Agent Francis York Morgan, the many odd inhabitants of Greenvale, their encounters, the investigation into a murder case and... the conclusion.

It will be an experience you’ll never forget.

    “Long time no see, Zach.

You didn’t forget about me, did you?

Shall we talk about the red seed case again?

That’s right... the case that would decide our destinies.”

Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut will have “a new branching ending” in addition to over 100 other improvements, an Amazon product listing has revealed.

A “brand new scenario a the beginning and end of the story” is also being added, straight from the mind of director Hidetaka “Swery65″ Suehiro.

Players will have access to a new item, as well—an in-game camera that lets you take snapshots as you play.

Publisher Rising Star Games previously promised a visual improvement for The Director’s Cut. According to Amazon, it’s a “complete graphical overhaul.”

Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut has not yet been dated. But Amazon says it’s due out for PlayStation 3 on April 30 for $39.99.
