^ truth. even tho i work for Toyota even i would advise to stay away.(i work for toyotetsu america inc. major american branch of Toyota that makes parts for the assembly line.) i just bought a used 2003 Monte Carlo SS for 8k. i love it. its sporty with a touch of luxury. but if you looking for a four door car the Pontiac g6's are really nice too can get an 06 for about 7k i think. and i would agree ford has come along way too. i like the new design they have been going with lately. the focus is a nice car and even kia offers some nice deals on there new models

edit: also make sure to get a car fax (not car fox) report when looking to buy.

4k? Maybe a Nissan Sentra or Honda Civic. Those last for a hell of a long time, definitely you'll get your money's worth. Furthermore, if something unfortunate would/should/will happen you can buy used parts really cheap.

Stay the heck away from US cars, pieces of crap.

I'm looking for a small car with good gas mileage, that's comfortable to drive and at least a basic cd player. My old car had 4 doors, but the back seat was so small I could barely ever have anyone sit in back.

I just bought a 2008 smart fortwo... 2 doors, 2 seats, AND a six disk CD changer. (= 35-40 mpg, too.

The coolant tank in my old Saturn exploded on me one day so I had to go out and buy a new car (who knew antifreeze would cause so much problems?). Found out it was a faulty water pump that caused the antifreeze to boil. I bought it in '04 (it was a '98 with 63000 miles on it) and it died in '07 (with 230,000 miles on it). I drove that car from New York to Miami, Florida twice a year, lived in Washington D.C. with the crappy ass traffic, drove 48 miles to work and from work each day and that thing still ran like a brand new car. The water pump thing was easily correctable if I had caught it in time but alas I didn't. I loved that damn car. Might've payed about $2000 for it and supposedly everyone says they last forever. Could look in to that option.

Otherwise now I have a Honda Accord and it's doubling as my transporter for kids, wife, etc. Has the room of a luxury vehicle but the sporty feel and Honda reliability of a Civic. Lot's of room and lot's of options for upgrades from Honda's expansive aftermarket options including the route which I went was to upgrade the fuel injection system to improve the gas mileage about 25%. Around $3000 more than the Civic and a couple hundred more gets you the V-6 option for the speedier people. I like it enough that I wouldn't go back and buy the Civic but I have to agree with people who've posted here, do yourself a long-term investment favor and get yourself a Honda that will last 20 years or so (wife has a Honda Civic Hatchback '91 that has 430,000 miles and it's still going strong).

I used to drive a 1991 Plymouth Laser. Had good gas mileage and I bought it for $800. Had an oil leak and a coolant leak and I drove the hell out of it. Lasted me for a good 2 and a half years before it quit. Had about 200k miles. Was a pretty good car for the money if you are looking at something cheap.

I found a Honda Civic from 2002, good price, no damage and I like the color and all. The only problem is the mileage. It's got about 114k on it, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with higher mileage Hondas.

Something similar happened to me. In my first truck I owned I was going down the road at about 50mph and the heater core which is under the dashboard on the passenger side blew up. It opened up and instantly dumped the entire contents of coolant into the cab of the truck. I basically took a giant steam bath in coolant. I couldn't see crap. I pulled over fast but it was already too late the engine had overheated and warped. It was catastrophic and fast. And I smelled like coolant for a month.

Get a turbo model or you'll be sorry. I had a tuned 90 Saab 900 SPG turbo that hauled ass, ran 16psi boost all day and smoked shit.

For the non-speedy people, they're also freakin tanks and will survive most any crash. Plus, we had a Saab 900 with 300k+ miles on it, mostly original and ran like a champ, something relatively common with these things.
