The pdf's on the Kindle are locked in size. I read a bunch of downloaded books using it, but I was stuck with really small font. And I've seen online a few times where there are programs that convert files into the kindle format. Amazon does it for you also and emails it back to you, but I'm not sure you want to do that with copyrighted materials.

I would suggest selling your Barnes and Noble card on plasticjungle and using the cash to buy a Kindle instead if you really want an ebook.

I'm also a Kindle owner. I've been using it just over a year now and I've got about 500 books loaded onto it right now. Amazon Customer Service is one of the big selling points on it for me. During the super bowl I dropped my kindle off the end table when it wasn't in it's case and it hit just wrong to break the screen. Even though the 1 year warranty doesn't officially cover drops, Amazon overnighted me a new Kindle with free shipping. Best of all the warranty was expiring 2 days later, but they still exchanged it.

There is a HUGE amount of public domain free and nicely formatted books. Anyone who says you can only use Amazon books on a Kindle hasn't done the research on it. If you want a huge resource on e-readers and books www.mobileread.com is one of the biggest and best around. It's also one of the places where the author of the Calibre program posts, it has a section on there.

I read a lot of scifi books and Baen is a great publisher of ebooks, all of the ones they sell are DRM free so they can be used on any reader. They have a large amount of freely available books available for download at http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/

Speaking of covers for the Kindle I ended up purchasing a cover from Oberon Designs ( http://www.oberondesign.com/ ). They are thick leather that look amazing in person and provide good protection. I picked up the Tree of Life design for my Kindle, but there are a huge amount of them available, they even have them for the Nook now.

Personally I'm waiting on Spring Design's Alex ebook reader (which should come out any day now) before I make a purchase. It's $100 more but it may turn out better. The Alex was what the Nook was going to be until they allegedly stole a lot of the design from Spring Design and made their own. It has a lot of cool shit and runs on android so you can put apps on it as well. http://www.springdesign.com/

Edit: You might want to check out www.mobileread.com/forums/ also
Oh man, that alex ereader actually looks really appealing.

I'm not sure why not. Just because it's copyrighted material doesn't mean you didn't purchase it. For all amazon's staff knows, you bought a book in the wrong format and need it converted for your kindle.

This. Amazon's customer service is really top notch. A++, would break my shit again.

As far as covers/cases go, I haven't found one that I like. I don't want something that fits snugly and zips, as I don't want to scratch it up with the zipper. I don't want a leather cover that just opens like a book, because I don't feel that's enough protection. The other pouches/cases I've found that fit what I'm looking for are just few and far between and not particularly attractive most of the time.

And for people concerned about losing it: my phone is more expensive than my kindle. I guess if you have trouble holding onto your electronics, don't get one. o
