    Opinions on wireless adapters

Well, I need to find a good wireless adapters, because my flatmate is retarded and keeps tripping up over the cable. Anyway, I dunno if this PC has enough space to fit in a wireless PCI card (I dunno how I would set up a PC card, aren't they for laptops?) so I was looking at USB adapters.

From what I've heard, USB ones weren't as good as a PCI card, but the last I actually went looking/shopping for one was about 3 year ago, so I dunno if that's changed. If so, would you recommend a USB over trying to see if a PCI would work? Is one generally better than the other at this point?

Looking around, it's hard to see what USB adapters would be best, it's also a pain to find out if the PCI card is compatible with 7 64bit.

Rofl, you know, that might actually work. Though, I worry about causing damage to the carpet with it. My landlord is a bitch and will deduct my deposit if the kitchen even smells slightly like curry.

I'll probably do that for a couple of days before throwing down hard cash on an adapter though. If it works out, then fuck it, though I may need one in the future eventually.

If you buy cable extension at the right place, you can probably go around your whole house for less than 10$.

Personally, if you want to go wireless I would buy a 15$ card on neweggs (pick one with good reviews) and a 50-60$ router. I've never heard anything good about USB adapter, and while it's possible some good one exist, I doubt they are cheap.

If you don't know how to install the card, then just find a tutorial somewhere on the net. I really doubt your pc wouldn't be able to take it, so I wouldnt be too worried.

It's not that I can't install it, it's pretty easy to do. I just worry that there isn't enough space between my graphics card and whatever else is below it in order to slot the card in. I saw a few good ones for £15, so it's not like I have to break the bank to try it out. Regardless, thanks for everything.

Other reason I ask is because the internet doesn't seem as fast wired as it does wireless, which seems odd to me. But maybe it's because I changed computers... I dunno, this shit is all so temperamental.

the only way I see that as being possible is if you have a 10/100 OLD SCHOOL network card versus a wireless N wifi card...

But most LAN cards these days are 10/100/1000 (mbps) so you should always get better connection speeds with a wire.

I use one of the gray cable tunnels above and then long skinny screws sunk right into the carpet (I can't sink it into the floorboards below because for some reason they used poured concrete on the second floor apartment). As long as your landlady doesn't see it screwed down you're good. When you thread them back out and ruffle the carpet it's just about impossible to notice; definitely would leave less trace than duct tape or something similar if you planned to have it in place a long time.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the speed and reliability of this USB adapter. Effectively had to go USB because it's a HTPC without much room for components. Has no problem torrenting at 800k/sec while simultaneously feeding 1080p media to other devices. Only issue was my fault: I figured both bands would be in use, not realizing that my dual-band router operated on multiple frequencies and this doesn't.
