FFXI Community Team Interview @ VanaFest

Hey BG,
During the trip to Tokyo for VanaFest, I had some time the night before to sit down with the North American Community Team. The resulting interview needed the requisite tweaks and approvals before I could post it, but it's Elmer's first big interview, so I'm excited to say that it is now up and ready.

I know the Community Team doesn't have all the secrets to endgame (or at least, can't reveal them) so I tried to make it a fun read and really show how these guys are fans like us, working behind the scenes to help us out and trying to have a good time in the process.

Very cool writeup, Elmer, grats on getting to interview them.

I got to chat a bit with Matt Hilton at the 2008 FanFest and these guys are, as you said, fans like us. Nice people, and they have fun working for/with Square.

The amount of involvement with VanaFest certainly was a pleasant surprise. Really do hope they get more involved.

Although they generally do not reveal their characters or servers to protect from harassment, the Community Team members are looking to flex their muscles in a more official capacity to connect better with the players.

As for the near future, I tried to prod the team a bit for details of their involvement in VanaFest, but they put up some resistance.


"Oh, we can't tell you that, that's a secret," Matt countered. "I can't believe you even asked that. This interview is over."


Did they say that jokingly or seriously? Because Matt just sounds like a dousche and definitely not knowing how to give a good image for his company if that was in a serious context. Definitely not professional at all

The team members are anything but douches, from my experience with them they're all great guys. Something like that would never have been said seriously and for you to think that makes me lol

I've talked to them at the fanfests and had them on the Pet Food Alpha podcast a few times. Can't say I brush my teeth together with them though, that's just weird >.>

No way, that was completely for the joke! Both of them kept a casual and fun attitude, which made the interview great to conduct. When Matt made that joke, we all laughed and I said, "I should just end the interview on that quote."
