FFXI Ultimate $7.49 for Sale on Steam Til Monday

It's about an 9gig download and you have to patch EVERYTHING. Only real advantage is the price and not having 7 CDs to swap through.

How does Steam's game backup work with XI? If you downloaded it, patched, and then did a backup using their tool, would that work as a one-click install? I keep a repository of installers on a backup HDD and that would be handy if that works.

I'm using Windower with FFXI on steam right now, all you have to do is reinstall windower after you install FFXI through steam.

weird, I had checked windower site at the time (2-3 months ago) and they had no known fix

I don't think you can Launch the windower shortcut with steam, but I run windower fine with steam version of FFXI, I'm using Windows 7 64 bit if that helps any.

I also downloaded FFXI with Steam and I use Windower just fine as well.

I just did the one and it whined at me and is doing a check, I guess Ill see if it works.

I had some pretty significant problems getting mine to work and the registry files alone didn't work for me. I had to also use the regsvr32 script. I had some trouble getting regsvr32 to work initially; I had to run the script under an elevated command prompt for it to run successfully.

If anyone needs it, this is a repost of the regsvr32 commands you'll need. Save it in a .bat file, drop it in your PlayOnline\SquareEnix folder, and run it using a command prompt with full admin privileges.

After I ran that script and imported the appropriate registry settings, POL started without complaints.

Anyone know the location of the FFXI registry entries for the Steam release? I can find POL/Tetra, but not FFXI. Either that or they've not been created yet since I've yet to run the config or the game, since it's taking a bloody year to update.
[EDIT] Yep, just had to run the config once and they were created. (couldn't do it mid-update since POL was running)

Just a shame that shortly after I get going in the game did I realize just how bad the add-ons really were. Figured the stupid fetch quests couldn't be that bad, until I went 1/94 on stupid Yagudo for the Moogle one. I really have no incentive to do them at this point other than completion's sake since I paid for them. Just hope I can find people looking to do the fights still.

FFXI is boring without a decent LS. Perhaps I should go shopping for a new one....

I bought this Sunday just for the addon's. I had ffxi installed from disc previously. You guys freaked me out, so I backed up the registry values. I didn't end up having to restore them. I simply clicked pause on the download and entered the key into POL. Steam never erased any reg values or anything. Vista Home Premium 32bit fyi.

It will if you don't do it fast enough. Its usually 10-20 seconds into the actual initiating phase. I would know personally from it happening on two workstations ._.

So yes, if you do it lighting fast and pause it immediately before it gets to that part, then it won't modify any registry settings or paths at all.

If the keys are applied to a brand new account, then yes. 30 free days. Otherwise no.
