ffxi + vista = rage

I play ffxi on a laptop, and there is some issue where windows tells me POL viewer has experienced a problem and has stopped responding only in laggy areas, i.e anywhere in whitegate, upper jeuno bazaars, and that is pretty much it. I have tried reinstalling directx, downloading and installing new drivers, running straight from POL, running from windower, checking and unchecking compatibility mode in windower, and I have also done a file check in POL, which turned up nothing. Any ideas? I am standing at the warp taru and literally can't stay logged in long enough to get him to load and warp me to another zone, shit sucks.
