Since ya'll are dumb and ignored the keyword here: SHIPPED. Not SOLD. There was an article recently saying how Japanese retailers had so many extras copies they cut the price in half.

Want to link that? I would be shocked... even if they bought to many the game will sell at a high price tag for months. Hell. My gamestop still thinks mw2 is worth 55 and that mw1 is worth 45. Ya they are drunk and high but I can't see ff13 having a price slash of 50 in a month or two, no matter how many they over ordered.

yea but uh... if they shipped 5 million copies to gamestop/best buy/amazon/etc, haven't the retailers already paid S-E for those copies? I mean to S-E's financial department it probably looks the same anyway lol

Not necessarily no. Many of the larger retailers only take items under buy-back agreements if products do not meet certain sales requirements.

i.e. I buy a million copies, if only 100k sell, they may be responsible to buy back the other 900k.

So no, 5mil shipped is not the same as 5mil sold to their accountants, they get the money up-front, but they don't get to keep it until they're sold.

You're assuming they have a buy-back agreement with Square-Enix and, on top of that, you're assuming they haven't met their required sales. I have my doubts that a buy-back agreement was necessary for this title.

Same shit happens to games like GTA after it's release. GTA4 was stock piled all over the bargain bin a couple months after it's release as well.
News flash: AAA Single player games that offer little to no replayability (no new game+? Seriously?) are often sold back to retailers by a lot of people.

quit overreacting. the game sold well
