Big ass fruit smoothie for breakfast and the rest of the day goes pretty well for me. Usually chicken and rice or a salad with grilled chicken, or something of that nature for lunch. Dinner is whatever is available, nothing too fatty . I'm not sure if there is any truth behind it, but i don't eat anything past 8PM. The later at night I eat, it seems the crappier i feel when i wake up. Peanut butter is great too in small doses. The natural stuff tastes just as good, without the extra fat. Drink plenty of water, and lay off the processed sugar too, it'll just make you feel like shit when it wears off.

i used to get REALLY groggy after meals until I completely eliminated white carbs (white rice, white flour, white potato) and processed sugar, to the point that I'd have an almost allergy-like reaction where my eyes would feel heavy. After cutting those things out I have so much more energy.

Also it's a lot easier to make a smoothie/shake for breakfast than it is to cook, just toss shit in a blender, blend for a minute, and throw it into a travel cup to drink on your way to work.

Eat 5-6 times a day but smaller portions.

At 10AM eat some raw cashews and a dried fruit, or maybe a yogurt. Have a smaller lunch maybe a tuna salad or salad with a half a tuna sandwich with whole grain bread.

At 3PM eat some fruit like an apple with a small bit of granola or some carrot sticks.

Be careful with granola and get something like Udi's. Granola can be deceiving as it can be loaded with syrups and sugars, get the unsweetened kind or very lightly sweetened with sugar and not corn syrup.

For dinner focus on eating more seafood like salmon, tuna, scallops etc etc instead of beef or chicken. Chicken is a lot leaner than beef but you want to eat fish at least 3x a week.

Also, don't eat again after dinner, you want to try and not eat at least 6 hours before you go to bed.

Eating smaller portions more often throughout the day keeps your metabolism going all day long as opposed to 3 big meals a day where your body tends to store away fat as reserve energy.

How many times a day you eat does not matter. Cutting out carbs does not matter. Cutting out fat does not matter. You need a balanced diet.

The amount of calories you're eating in a day is pretty important.

Calories in > calories out (via basal metabolic rate, exercise/activities and stuff you eat) = you gain weight.
    Calories in < calories out (" " ") = you lose weight.

It's pretty simple. What kind of oatmeal are you eating? If it's the instant kind, I can imagine you'd be pretty hungry soon after. Have you ever tried steel-cut oatmeal? Whenever I have it for breakfast I feel fuller for longer than when I used to eat the instant kind - I usually put some fresh strawberries or blueberries on it, and I'll eat some yogurt too.

Whether or not you want to eat a lot of small meals during the day, or three balanced bigger meals, it's up to you. Just burn more calories than you take in, and you'll lose weight, just think of this: eat whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, and lean meats, and don't eat to excess. It takes some getting used to when you start eating healthy, but your body will thank you for it - you'll have more energy, you'll sleep better, etc.

I get the oatmeal from the cafeteria at work. No idea what kind it is but when I get in at 7am they are making it, it's in a huge pot. Then I add raisins and cranberries to it. I am not hungry after breakfast but I am tired. Going to start drinking tea with it tomorrow.

For lunch I usually have grilled chicken on a spinach wrap, lettuce tomato etc or whatever wrap special they have for the day tuna, chicken or sliced turkey.

Atreides: Also it's a lot easier to make a smoothie/shake for breakfast than it is to cook, just toss shit in a blender, blend for a minute, and throw it into a travel cup to drink on your way to work.

Next week I will give this a try, I guess I think to much into it, you make it sound quite easy.

    Thanks again everyone.

You're quite the fucking moron in ignoring nutritional science regarding how your body metabolizes food.

Naturally exercise helps, but concerning diet you want to keep your metabolism high by constantly feeding it nutritional foods throughout the day in smaller portions.

    Stop being a douchebag.

Also, don't try and debunk my post and the repeat every point I made in paragraph form you dumb fuck.

if oatmeal is making him groggy switching to steel cut oatmeal won't make him any less groggy lol

The benefit to steel cut oatmeal is that the grains are shaped in a way to allow your digestive enzymes to penetrate them more evenly, so they're supposedly more nutritious.

And while (very) basically it's a simple matter of calories in vs. calories out, Finesse is right- when you eat and how much does matter and can make a huge difference.

Indeed. Do not listen to anything Talus said.

Anyways, someone may have brought it up already, but there is rarely any point to a diet without exercise. Unless you're clinically obese, you'll probably end up worse off in the long run. What will happen is that you will lose weight although some of your muscle tissue will also break down because you're not exercising and your malnourished. The volume of your muscle tissue affects your basal metabolic rate. What you're left with at the end of your diet is a thinner body although the second you're off the diet, you gain it back and then some because your basal metabolic rate is now lower.

If you're talking about eating healthier, you'd actually be surprised at what you can eat and remain healthy. Generally you should avoid eating too much of the really bad things (cholesterol, sodium, transfats, etc.) Other than that, it doesn't really matter as long as you're getting decent amounts of protein, sugar, and carbs. I'd recommend taking a multivitamin as well, it will cover any bases that you miss.

As far as drinks go - Don't drink anything but water with your meals. You can drink other types of beverages when you're thirsty although I'd read the labels. The calories can add up massively in unexpected ways (one tall can of Arizona Raspberry Iced Tea for example contains 24% of the calories of an average person's daily allotment...)

Eating smaller meals throughout the day helps boost your BMR and so does exercising in the mornings.

I know the important of exercise and I started jogging again. I am trying to get back into shape. I was never thin but when I was in college and playing baseball I was in decent shape. Since college ended 5 yrs ago and I started working behind a desk for 9 hours a day I have gained some weight and probably could not jog a mile without stopping.

I drink nothing but water 95% of the time it's the food I ate after college that really hurt me. I stopped exercising and just ate crap. Just looking to get back into shape w/ diet and exercise. I know some people say just watch what you eat and don't do a full blown diet but I can't I really need to be strict about things or I will stray.

I agree with this. I've always eaten like that and it worked great for me until I got pregnant.. 1 year later, I still have the momma pouch and weigh about 20-30 more pounds than I did beforehand.

Listen to what these guys are saying. America has this fucked up concept that a diet means eating less which is just horrifically wrong.

As long as you eat the right foods, in the right portions, at the right times along with moderate exercise your body will do the rest of the work for you. The worst thing anyone can do to themselves is binge diet and drop weight faster than their body can keep up.

Farmers markets are great place to get organic vegetables for cheap. If you have a Sunflowers Market where you live they're a great place to shop as they purchase locally and don't have as much junk food as a normal grocery store does.

Seriously, I go into Sunflower and get a pound of Alaskan wild caught salmon, two ahi tuna filets, 2 pounds of shrimp, pound of scallops and all the fruits and veggies I need for $150 and it feeds me and my wife for a little over a week.

The great thing about eating healthy is not only your body, but your wallet. I mean if you just went chicken and turkey in lieu of all the seafood I get you'd save an extra $40 easily.

Your BMR goes down as you age, so that could have something to do with it. Not being active will also decrease your BMR, which from what you said about yourself sounds like what happened. It's probably not that you're eating 'bad' foods (if there truly is such a thing), just that you're eating more than your body needs. A good approach to this is to count calories for a week or two while you're not on a diet (and not exercising.) When this is done, restart your exercise and curb your calorie intake to about 80% of what it was beforehand. This will result in steady weight loss and your BMR will increase while this is occurring.

Some people recommend eating more vegetables and the like because the water content is higher (thus you feel like you've eaten more when really you haven't.) You could also just drink more water with your meals and eat the foods you like, the result is going to be about the same.

How about splitting the difference with the carbs and protein and going with something like yogurt with some fruit/granola on top? Throw in a hard boiled egg like people have suggested if it's not filling you up enough.

I can't stress how important it is to change what you are eating to be overall healthier.. diets don't work - you need to make a lifestyle change that you will be happy with for years. Cut out the junk food (we all know what it is), try to eat lots of fresh foods, add a workout and you will feel and look great.

I've eaten many small meals during the day, I've eaten 2-3 bigger meals idea and managed to lose weight both ways. Nutritional science has blown this shit way out of proportion, it may technically be right but not everyone has the time/desire to do that shit. Its easier to just monitor calories in/out jeez.

Maybe if you started with the OP and then read the responses before replying you wouldn't sound like such a cockmongler when you post.

    Wow, really?

I know how the body metabolizes food. Do you?

It's a Myth that small/mini-meals are better than three hearty ones. No substantial peer-reviewed evidence has been turned up that eating frequency really matters. The current research was reviewed by scientists at Newcastle University and Griffith University in Australia. Additionally, a 2009 study n>10k participants reported that people that nibbled between meals were 69% more likely to gain weight over five years.

It ONLY works if you choose nutritious foods and control portion sizes. You've mentioned that. However, how often does this happen, especially in America? Don't say I'm a dumb fuck when you don't have any evidence to back up anything you espouse. Come up with facts instead of anecdotes, instead of an ad-hominem attack.

You can eat three times a day, or five, or six, if you are getting the same amount of calories from the 3/5/6/10/whatever "meals" then the result will be the same. That's irrefutable.

I'm not full of shit. You lack evidence and you are dismissive. If anyone's full of shit, I'd say it's you. Agree to disagree.

As for the carbs talk on the last page. Moderation like a mofo. Not good to have none, but, too much can also be bad. When exercising, you'll burn your carbs before you can burn any fat, so if your workout isn't long enough, you could end up burning off no fat and only the carbs you've recently eaten.
