Education in America?

I posted the white, male stuff to give you a demographic feel. As I said, I was able to go to school without loans because my college fund was able to pay for most of it. Example of my sister was to give you an idea of what kind of scholarship you could get with a good GPA etc. at a private school.

That being said are there scholarships at US schools that help you if you are a minority? Yes, yes there are of course. Is it 'white victimization'? I do not know nor do I care, if you are qualified and work hard to get to the school you want to go to you can do it in my opinion. I wanted to go in state because at the age of 18 I was not sure what I wanted to do, and its much cheaper to do that in state than at any other college - I am doing much more to get into a graduate school that I want.

While your sister may not be able to get a scholarship to that one specific school, she should be able to get a full ride to just about any state school if she does ok on the SAT.

In Canada, our tutitions are very high too. Especially in the province I live in, about $5000 a year on average. The city of about 500k people that I live in has 6-7 universities, which is way too many, so their tutitions are very high.

I have a $30,000 student loan I'm attempting to pay off in a $12/hr job (although I do admit I paid off a large portion while I worked in South Korea at $30,000/year). I'm a white female and I went to university in my late 20s. I didn't qualify for much of anything.

We don't have many Hispanics or the issues with blacks that America has, but if you're a Status Indian you get absolutely free university tutition plus room and board in any school that accepts you (and they all have quotas for natives). I learnt that about $20,000 into my student loan and was pissed.

I'll gladly pay more for tuition if it means I get to be white! People don't cross the street to avoid me or clutch on to their belongings when I step into an elevator with them. Hell, some even give me a nod and a hello while making eye contact when I walk by them on the sidewalk. Being white is great.

Shut the fuck up, I scored slightly lower on the old SAT and didn't pay a dime at a state university that's a top 100 international school. I'm male and as white as can be.

What was your GPA and where did you apply? I made a 1400 but my GPA was only 3.4, got a full-ride to LSU. I think coming from out of state(GA) was a factor, but still.

Don't think that's true really, 5-7k per *year* for state tuition seems to be the norm, 10k+ doesn't seem like the low-end, though it's annoying to google that as I just found out >.>.

Also most states have programs(like NY has tap) to give free aid to state citizens that effectively makes tuition free if you're a state citizen going to a state school.

Judging from the 'debate', I'm starting to think skin color arguments are bad jokes again. I applied to 12 different schools around the country last time (before I changed my mind). What I'm hearing are complaints from people saying they didn't get accepted for school such-and-such. Don't you have a look at alternatives?

I don't apply to schools aimed at and/or located in areas focused on minorities, 'cause I'm a white caucasian and incredibly scandinavian male. So why would I?

One thing's for sure; I won't go to school in the US. Maybe an exchange student to China. Not so much fussing about and they got some good looking girls around

If you are just going to China for study abroad that is fine, but if it is for full-time school I can think of maybe a few schools worth it. There is a reason a lot of people come from China/HK to the US for school or their MA.

I'm glad I'm not the only one suffering - although I'm not glad the injustice exists to begin with. I'm by no means a KKK member or some retarded shit, I just want things to be equal. Everything should be based on quantitative qualifications and merits and acolades. Being black isn't a merit. Its just what you are. It doesn't make you any smarter or dumber. There's smart black people and there's dumb white people. Black people are genetically just as capable intellectually as other races. And um... Hello, we have a black President. Black people really don't need the leg up anymore. They needed it in 1960, but its 2010 now. Are their poor black communities still? Yep. There's also poor white areas too.

Two biggest keys to black students catching up to white students:
--Black parents start taking more responsibility for their kids and make sure they don't idolize the wrong pop figures (*cough* everysinglerapperwithgunswhosingslikegettingshotan d/orarrestedissomethingtobragabout) or get in with the wrong crowd. Raise them with an appreciation for education, too.

--Black kids stop pressuring others into doing bad. If some black kid is doing really well in school and is showing off their smarts, they're "acting white." Fuck that, they're not acting white, they're just trying to succeed and the antagonizer should bust out a notepad and take some notes on them.

Thing here is, if you've studied/worked abroad, then that is an indication towards responsibility, broad horizons, ambition.. you name it. It's a thing to put on your CV or resumé, and of course, it's always fun to go live in some exotic countries for a while and experience their culture.

While I'm not from the U.S, a good friend of mine I met at school was from Wisconsin and I've heard pretty much the same story from him. There are so many scholarships available for students from low-income families (which make sense) yet there are ones for students just because they are classed as a minority, crazy. I wouldn't complain if I was in their shoes but I'd feel a little insulted that I'm getting money thrown at me like some charity case.

I hear there are a lot of military scholarships in the US that are pretty decent too. My friend had the opportunity to have his University fees paid for him if he went to a military school, but he just didn't want to join a military school for various reasons. I believe it's also the same for religious schools too, friends were telling me about Christian schools that also offer many scholarships, ya know if you can put up with the crazy that these people spout. =/

Even though the amount you guys have to pay is ridiculously high, at the end of the day some of the best schools in the world are situated in the U.S. so at least you are getting what you pay for.
In my situation, my parents can't afford to pay for my fees however they are not considered poor enough that I get my fees paid for me by the government so I have to take out a student loan. The interest is pretty low, but I'm gonna be paying it off for a long time. <_>

Which is why it would be a good idea to do a study abroad in China for maybe a year. I'm am confident universities in Sweden are partnered with some universities in China, some schools may even have special programs that would be of interest.

It is definitely the same in the US, if you plan on working with a certain area you best go there for some period of time. One reason I am going back :D
