This is why I put "black" and "white" in quotation marks when I refer to the culture. I believe these to be misnomers. Any black person on these forums will tell you how annoying it is when black people accuse us of being less black or more white because of how we act.
    Everything here.

At the same time this is why I think scholarships should be offered on more than just race, when people base things on race they simply reify the issue. Any person worth their salt on race, class, gender issues knows it is never one thing, it is a variety of things that play into one's social standing.

    Also:
Trust me, black people who are trying to do something with their life hate the wannabe thugs on college campus more than white people do lol.
Anyone who has ever been in a minority (myself included - just because I'm white doesn't mean I have never been a minority) should be able to relate to this very easily heh.

I mean, technically there already is (you can't go back to school until you pay back the money you received, unless you had a good reason, in which case you can file an appeal), but obviously that's not a strong enough incentive for someone who didn't care about school enough to keep going.

You just called out cream soda.

I thought black people suppose to stick together and stick it to the man aka whitey.

..honestly don't know why you are entertaining some of these people. Just look at half the threads in general, it is painfully obvious that most are racist, but try to mask it behind a joke.

and lol @ african american college funds. You're white though, so i'm sure you know far more about minority loans than i do.., my parents had to pony up a nice portion of my tuition WHICH included loans. Ya know.. the stuff grants and pell didn't cover. I guess my skin wasn't dark enough.

The majority of average Americans gets screwed. Most of everyone walks away with a good chunk of student loans. Stop with all this racist bullshit.

We actually do. I'm just pretending that there's conflict among us to confuse the white man and catch you off guard

I didn't qualify for my provinces scholarships because 2 years before I graduated high school my mom remarried and essentially jumped up into a high income bracket.

But honestly the one thing that pisses me off at University more than anything else is the cheating/copying. Literally sitting at the back of the class for 5 minutes I can find 3-4 cases of cheating, and they seem to get 80% or more on those papers. My room mate is a TA for another department and he often asks what I think about an answer and whether or not it sounds "off". If I sense any bit of cheating I always recommend nailing that person to the wall for it. People need to learn to do independent work and actually accomplish something of value rather than leaning on another persons effort.

Most people here at least got part of what I was aiming to communicate, but black people, not me, or white people, invented the term "acting white" to bully or bring down fellow black students who were working hard and studying in inner city schools. I completely had a whole section in one of my posts where I explain that I believe that all black people can learn just as efficiently as white people, the problem (that I'm trying to communicate over the last several posts) is black culture interferes with black students achieving and narrowing the educational disparity.

The MLK thing was a reference to me believing MLK likely didn't envision African-Americans blowing their newfound freedom for upward mobility and indulging in rap/inner city ghetto culture/lifestyle, excessive emphasis/belief in athletic dreams, "get rich or die tryin'" crap. I honestly don't believe, with any fiber of my being, that Martin Luther King would approve of 50 Cent or any of his 100 other musical clones. Myron Rolle is a kid I think he'd be proud of. Black, a star athlete, but also a Rhodes Scholar hoping to become something medical... I believe a surgeon?

pro-tip: thug/ghetto culture is what nice ol' suburban white folk spend loads of money on and want to have, yet at the same time it reinforces negative stereotypes that you have never ever had to fucking deal with.

keep talking about how blacks need to put forward the right kind of role models- yeah, role models can just appear out of thin air. maybe, just maybe, if you give young black men and women with potential, but disadvantaged backgrounds and difficult lives growing up, a shot at college you might get some role models out of that... which is what we've seen, even in spite of the glorification of thug life.

To add on what's being said, thug/Ghetto culture imo is at a that point it is a product of today's pop culture. It's making people money so in all honesty it's not gonna go away until either someone steps up and denounces it or it gets unpopular and people start to realize that living that way isn't really as glamorous as their idols would have them believe.

What it should be like is how like some of my friends grew up listening to shitty metal bands and starting their own but not being successful. Then they grow up and realize that if they want to live a comfortable life, that sort of lifestyle has to take a backseat. Problem is on top of many other problems, the media doesn't allow the youth to make that realization because the people who should be considered role models are never seen or heard from.

I won't lie I didn't even know who Neil deGrasse Tyson was until I saw Miz bring him up.

I'm not worried, because I do believe that eventually (though it'll take time) that ghetto culture will fade out and grow old. Just like all those subcultures, since it is heavily influenced by stereotypical rap/hiphop. Heck, we even managed to get rid of the hippies (thank god)!

And don't give me any "that's not the only reason" crap, because any halfwitted squirrel can figure that out. However, it is a major factor and would thus give it a speedy boost.

The ghetto culture isn't going to just fade away by itself. It's going to change over time, but it's not going to just spontaneously change from a culture that glorifies crime and violence. There are much deeper issues that need to be addressed before this will fade.
