It's pretty much what I have running windows XP - most annoying touchpad on the planet, but I love mine apart from that, pretty sturdy considering how much I manage to drop/generally abuse electronics and the keyboard's decent enough to type on - typing on it now from the car. Main reason I went for this was the fact it's one of the few that have the display out port on it - and since I work as a sub teacher I wanted something I had the ability to hook up and project powerpoints and what-not.
    (and it's red and shiny)

Yes I'm an unashamed gadget freak if it's small and pretty coloured.

Apologies for typos - trying to type this before we go into a tunnel and I lose mobile signal!

This website has a good top 10 rating of netbooks. Unfortunately the site is in German but they test things thoroughly and also take pictures from all angles, measure how warm it gets, battery life, performance etc.

    http://www.notebookcheck.com/Top-10-...s.16390.0.html

I usually use this site when I want info on new netbooks/laptops.

How do netbooks do as far as playing videos? I'm going back to cincy and also going up to NY hopefully and don't want to lug around my 19" laptop whose batter has shit the bed and I just want to know what all I'd be able to do on one?

They are good at it, other than the obvious screen size restrictions.

There are some netbooks that are specifically geared to be capable of 1080p playback, it's just a matter of doing the research to find out which actually do it and do it well as opposed to the models who claim it.

eh, most netbooks have cookie-cutter hardware. Things to really look out for are; Screen res, battery, hard-drive type and OS.

You can spot powerful netbooks very easily. Walk by one, and the heat emanating from one will alert you to it's presence.

Great to have if you live in Siberia.

Well thanks everyone for your suggestions: I think I'm going to go for a Dell Mini 10v and hackintosh it.

If you are going for the DELL mini, and want full 1080p, make sure it comes with the broadcom addiotion (i think only their higher end set ups come with it).

You could play some HD with the right codecs and settings, but that takes work and doesn't apply to web streams.

Personally, I don't see the point of 1080p on a netbook. Also I want one that's hackintosh compatible, and the stock standard seems to be

Oh and don't let a man with a bottle of beer near it... my new husband managed to give mine a light bath in Stella Artois the other day and it's messed up a bit of the screen somehow... waiting till the suspicious beer smell dies down before trying to blag it as a "fault" it's just developed.

Married 48 hours... break yer wife's laptop - way to earn peace and tranquility around the home... not.
