I know that you get more Technique points back that hardly seems worth it but everybody seems extremely concerned with getting 5 stars, especially on boss fights. What's the deal? Something I'm missing?

trophies.
5-stars opens up the search function on this section.
Better drop rates?
Increases drop rates (lowers drop rate for shrouds though). There's also trophy/achievements for getting 5 stars on all of the missions and 5 stars on the final boss. Other than that it is just a good way to gauge how well you're doing.
You get to feel like a real Xbox kiddie with your l337 gamerscore.
You also can feel like a real facebook pro when everyone that has you friended can see that you unlocked that super cool PS3 trophy.
I do it for the drops, mostly. I hate not getting loot at the end of a fight - reminds me too much of FFXI. There should always be something to salvage on a corpse, even if its just some plating or sprockets off of a machine, or some clothes or entrails off of a humanoid.
Penny Arcade said it best.
When that mob drops that crisp basilisk urethra, pick up that shit. Somebody, somewhere, is gonna have a use for that, and will pay top dollar for it.
If they actually did something other than.. well... nothing, then I'd actually go after them. Getting a trophy for turning on the power, or getting a trophy for completing a tutorial... come on.
Whatever happened to getting your reward when you fucking beat the game. Go back to Ninja Gaiden on the NES. If you want a reward or a pat on the back, beat the damned game and get your awesome CS.
Have a contest or something - get over a million trophies and get a free game or something. As it stands now, they're nothing more than a visible "high score" that serves no purpose.
Edit: And if you think I'm not "skilled" enough to get a freakin trophy, get SS rank in Armored Core: 4A without exploits, then come back to me.
5 star trophy is more of a sidequest/challenge. Either way, it extends the time you spend with the game and for many that's a good thing. I went for all bosses in XII too and guess what? It didn't have trophies/achievements.
XIII has more battle and less exploration than other RPG's so I don't see anything wrong with people going for 5-star trophy.
^ I'll accept that only because you have a Spellblade avatar, and I really enjoyed that game.
If you don't 5-star every battle you are a terrible gamer and should be ashamed. Go play Rummy and Whist at the old folks home.
I dunno, I didn't 5-star that elemental plant boss with Light and Hope. That guy was a bitch, and I'm a hardcore over-grinder in RPGs.
I got 5 stars on that one, but got 0 stars on the Ch 9 boss. I was never able to stagger him again after the first Destructo.
5-stars on him, but only after dying twice. Once to the massive ga-spam after 2 parts knocked off, and once after I got cocky trying to speed up the fight after the first Destructo.
slightly off topic but is anyone else glad they got rid of the stupid fucking minigames?
so fucking glad I don't have to become the moogle/chocobo homogay buttsex world grand champion 300 times to unlock someone's ultimate whatever

What do you mean you can't tell the mog doesn't want more to eat?
I miss blitzball, but I'll agree that jumping through flaming hoops of silliness shouldn't be a requirement for a weapon of mass destruction.
A trail of battle, sure. A test of strength, agility, or courage or something. Not a test of grating one's nerves. That's like asking someone to withstand 3 hours of nails on a blackboard in complete darkness to get Caladbolg or something.
