I was thinking about River recently, and realized why I'm sad about her. A character who knows the doctor, possibly travelled with him before, but is new to him is a great concept for a character. But, River became almost too much more over just that really cool idea. The doctor is a time traveller, so this should happen more often than it has. But, thanks to River, they really can't do the same thing in an interesting way without seeming to repeat themselves too much.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole idea of her knowing more of him in his future and him knowing less of in hers. From my understanding, and as we progressed through the show, he should have remembered previous encounters with Rivers, not the other way around. It seemed like she knew less of him/met him for the first time and yet she would leave her "Sweetie" comments all over the place. Doesn't that contradict the entire concept of being on the opposite spectrum of timeline? Also, in the last days of Transilore(sp), River is nowhere near the Doctor, so what ta fuck did she mean she knew him when he is much older? Did she mean Capaldi's Doctor? Cause sure as hell she didn't mean Smith's.

iirc tenants run only lasted like 3-5 years of the doctors actual age, like he was 900 when he regenerated on Christmas and 905 when he regenerated at "the end of time pt2"? always thought that was weird leaving him a very short period of time for adventures not on tv

The Doctor during Matt's run went to something like 2500. He fought on Trenzalor for a really long time. His death by River was at 1100

I think he was fighting people off for about 600 years, starting at just over 900 as Matt Smith. I forget where else he aged considerably, but I swear there was something that caused it. I guess maybe he adventured a lot more with Clara in and out, because we only caught on to SOME of the times Clara went along and Clara didn't travel/live in the TARDIS like other companions.

Though one thing I don't see brought up in age discussions (not that I've seen too many, mind you) is...how could he ever know? We track age by earth-year. Do we even know if Gallifrey has a similar duration for a year? And how long has it been since he lived on Gallifrey for that method of tracking age to still work?

Hasn't it been heavily implied that Time Lords have an innate sense of time? The sense Tennant talks about in Pompeii that allows him to see what he can and cannot change. It's possible he can just track it in his head.

Considering he IS a Time Lord, I would expect him to at least have that sense.

That's how he's able to look at a planet and guess the time.


The doctor has also said that he's so old he doesn't know if he's lying about his age anymore. I imagine when you're 2100 years old a single year means nothing.

God that still makes no sense. He could've left if he just talked about the hybrid, and we went to the end of the universe and Ashildir still wasn't sure what the hybrid was. If whatever it was supposed to do mattered at all, wouldn't it have done it in all the intervening years? Wouldn't she have heard about it and thus known who/what the hybrid was?

That's what I got from it. She planned to use their beams to recharge her teleporter and get out.

Looks like Moffat created a loophole for future stories for Capaldi and Kingston by having a night on Derriluim last 24 years.

I hate that Moffet did. Should have just closed it out. Maybe gave River hope. She went to the Library not knowing it was the end. Thats what made the ending more emotional in Silence in the library.

Otherwise, great episode. Just fantastic.
