Yeah I just started thinking about this since I watched Baker era "The Deadly Assassin" and they mentioned how The Master was finished with his 12th regeneration and couldn't do it anymore.
Pay no attention to this limit as it has been broken by the Master and retconned.
During the 4th Doctor's reign when he was on trial, there was a discussion about a mysterious figure called the Valeyard which is supposed to be the incarnation born of the darker side of the doctor that appeared somewhere between his 12th and 15th regeneration. Not only that, but also there is a scene in one episode (i'll have to find it) where they show previous forms of the Doctor and there were faces that had not yet been seen which had hinted that the Doctor had more regenerations or forms long before his 1st - 4th incarnations.
In all it really points back to the old Cartmel Master plan that was to restore some backstory to the doctor while making him more mysterious. The idea that was being planted throughout the 7th's tenure was that the Doctor was more than just a Timelord and quite possibly the so called "Other" that was there with Rassilon and Omega during the founding of Gallifrey.
for lack of a better description The Doctor is basically a Superman version of a normal timelord?
In one episode of the Sarah Jane Adventures (Death of the Doctor), Matt Smith answers the questions of how many regenerations he can have with a number like "five hundred and eleven". It might've been a throwaway line in a kid's show, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they're going with now.
Sounds exactly like a throwaway line.
I don't think we should get too hung up on the number of regenerations available to The Doctor, since in earlier lore the Time Lord Council could give regenerations at their leisure, and we don't really know what happened during the Time War. Really, they could have been offering near-unlimited regenerations like they were Cracker Jack prizes, just for the sake of killing Daleks. Also, its not known whether The Doctor appropriated the knowledge of gaining further regenerations.
Regarding The Doctor's name, I don't recall the audience ever actually being promised a reveal. We just learned that she knew his name, I don't think they'll ever let a mystery like that go.
re: name, in the alt universe/timeline he told river "look into my eye" not what his real name is. going on that we need another wedding because she tells David tenant doctor his real name to get him to trust her. so he still has to tell her his real name which he hasn't done yet. (right?)
There have also been dates that we haven't seen during the Tennant/early smith so really, a older version of her could already know it.
There might be one time that he's allowed to say his name...
Spoiler: show
Also:
Fezes are cool again.
Nothing too surprising, but there will be another mini-episode for Children in Need this Friday.

Doctor Who has a long tradition of taking part in Children in Need and this year fans are in for a double treat! There’s a brilliant new prequel to the Christmas Special starring Matt Smith as the Time Lord and featuring a number of familiar faces… If you need any more incentive to tune in we’ll just add that it was written by Steven Moffat!
Aside from that, there’s a new, exclusive preview trailer of the Christmas Special that includes the first glimpse of the Doctor with his new companion… Both items will be on BBC One on Friday, 16 November and will be available to view online soon after their Children in Need premiere.
council on gallifrey dictated that time lords can only have 12 regenerations (13 bodies) before they're forced to "die" i think
now that they're gone, anything goes!

David tenant (hope that's the correct spelling) is meant to make a return to doctor who next year but isn't telling us what he is doing
