Yeah, that makes me wonder what was so hard about it. Maybe it was just a new show and everybody just hadn't become used to each other yet.

Sometimes I wonder about Sci-Fi shows like this that have rubber monsters and Deus ex machina in every other episode and think that it is easy for fans to say "I'd totally be behind Eccleston and the show" but the show is really run by a few guys that like this genre and understand the necessity for those things, and a bunch of people that are just there for a paycheck.

One of the comments on that page mentions something about the fact that they were shooting in South Wales for the first season and the wages for the crew were a lot less than what they would earn in London. That and they fell behind on a few episodes and had grueling schedules to catch up. I do hope that if they do multiple doctor special that he will join in on the fun.

Got around to watching it finally, and erring on the side of caution:

    Spoiler: show
Was expecting to at least have a bit at the beginning where River takes off or whatever explains her absence. Was also thinking at several of those parts, It's a good thing his wife isn't around. I guess she might be the perfect companion though, she gets lost/dies/left behind/trapped in a parallel world, you just go pick up another copy. Was a tad disheartening that Mary Poppins didn't live, but I guess that's just Disney making sad stories nice again.

Unless you want to commit to a full 7 seasons, I would suggest starting at the most recent doctor which is season 5 or 6. The budget is also much higher starting then, the actors are better, characters are more attractive (they were stuck with one "average" from the previous season) and the show has much better writing/finally moves away from campy 60's "evil robot" sci-fi a little bit. It will be a little odd, but much more entertaining than sitting through 2005-2009 eps that can be very mediocre.

Funny enough I just started watching the show about two months ago. Just caught up with season 7 and I found 1-5 to be much more entertaining. Amy is sexy and a good sidekick but other then that I prefer the other seasons. Smith isn't bad, just not as good.

The BBC has just announced that the upcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary festivities will officially include all former Doctors. It’s not quite a TV episode though.

There has been much speculation as to what format the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special would take. Fans have been clamoring for their favorite past Doctors to take part. In particular, Tom Baker and David Tennant’s names have run high on fans’ wishlists.

According to the Radio Times, Nicholas Briggs, who many fans will recognize as the voice of the Daleks and Cybermen since 2005, is penning an audio story.

Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann are explicitly confirmed for the 100-minute-long audio story ‘The Light at the End,’ while Briggs has hinted that remaining Doctors Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and incumbent Matt Smith are “behind the project”, and that the Time Lord’s first three incarnations, originally played by the late William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee, could also feature.

The above list includes all of the surviving Doctors. Nonetheless, the first through third Doctors will be included in the story even though their human counterparts have long since passed away.

Fans who have been dying for former companions will not be disappointed either as the actresses who played Peri, Ace, and Nyssa will also be voicing their former characters. Additionally, Geoffrey Beevers, who played the first incarnation of The Master, will also be participating.

There is no word on whether these former Doctors will be taking part in an actual TV episode. On the other hand, this audio would certainly explain the cagey answers recent given by David Tennant, Christoper Eccelston, and Tom Baker about involvement in the 50th anniversary when their previous answers were a resounding, “I haven’t been asked.”

I don't think it's Smith being a bad Doctor, I think it's just Moffat needing to move on and pass the torch.

Yeah think you have a point. I don't think of him as bad, just something missing.

Fuck that, start with Eccleston and go forward! I'll admit some of the episodes were very mediocre. But as a whole I found all of those seasons to be immensely enjoyable. You're really missing out imo if you skip those seasons.

Agree 100% also. There's something awesome about the low budget Eccleston episodes that make them awesome. It also makes you appreciate the budget the show got starting in Tennant season 1 a lot more.

Also, most of the best episodes take place during Eccleston and Tennant. You'd be missing out on a ton of great stuff if you don't see Blink, The Library, and pretty much all of the Eccleston season.

If you could mold all the wrongness of that statement into a solid object, it'd be more dense than iron.

I had always wanted to watch Doctor Who. I'd occasionally catch a bit of an episode on TV but never actually got around to seeing it. I finally caved in and said, "Let's see what this Doctor Who is all about" and watched all of Matt Smith's first season online. I absolutely loved it. I then went back and watched from Eccleston on with my boyfriend to catch up. I wish I had started there in the first place, because Tennant is by far THE Doctor. He is MY Doctor. Matt Smith does funny and silly just fine, but Tennant does everything. Tennant can sell the most cheesey, horribly written line. I haven't seen Smith do as well and in my opinion the writing and acting with his seasons just aren't as good. I'm getting really disappointed with the way the show is going now. Some of Tennant's worst episodes are still better than Smith's ok ones in my opinion. The best thing from Smith's seasons is River. I did quite enjoy the banter between River and the Doctor.

The boyfriend and I just started rewatching Doctor Who to go through the Tennant era again. I miss Tennant as the Doctor.

In short: Tennant fangirl. Always start with Eccleston, get through his one season, then bask in the glory that is Tennant as the Doctor.

If you like Tennant, watch the Peter Davison years from the old run. He was Tennant's Doctor when he was growing up and actually borrows a lot from him.

I just found/finished watching 1-7 in the past 2 months as well (one ep of season 7 still to go actually). I found the most recent doctor seasons much better. 1-5 is almost a different show seeing as how the new doctor got all new sets and aliens and dumped the entire side-cast that had been present since 2005.

Bolded part being one of the biggest things I hate about the newer seasons. The only continuity is River and only because she was in two episode prior to Smith. Otherwise they completely threw it out the freaking window. I hope to hell they don't butcher Cybermen when they make their return in the upcoming second half of this season.

That's a big reason I've been liking the new ones. The cybermen and daleks have been a tertiary rather than primary enemy and the doctor isn't flabbergasted when he finds them not extinct every other episode...

Probably not a big deal to most, but I saw all the episodes in a short amount of time and some aspects got boring fast. The only entertaining bit from the two races before the smith eps was when they ran into each other and did a back and forth demanding the other to identify in 60's robot voice.

Find it pretty funny that Davison is actually his father-in-law now, must be like a dream come true for Tennant lol

Yeah. Tennant is a pretty lucky guy. He got into acting because he wanted to be The Doctor and got the role eventually, got to tell Davison that he was his Doctor face to face, becomes one of the most beloved Doctors of all, and then retired from the role to a life of banging Davison's daughter / marrying her while continuing his Shakespearean acting career and doing sketch comedy with Katherine Tate.
