Why is it when I saw this Doctor, the first thing that came to mind was Doc Brown from Back To The Future?

My only gripe was the regen from Matt -> Capaldi was super fast but the cameo by Karen Gillan was awesome

I think that it's related either to the fact that he's been given a whole new regeneration cycle, or that most of the regeneration energy expended during the regeneration process that we've seen in the past was already expended when he took out the Dalek ship.

I couldn't hold back the feels during that final scene with the Eleventh and Clara in the TARDIS, especially with the bow tie. I was expecting some bow tie related scene before he regenerated, but even then, it just got me.

I also liked how it pretty much encompassed and wrapped up most everything involving Matt's tenure. Still wondering exactly how the Kovarin chapter managed to gain control of the TARDIS to blow it up in The Pandorica Opens

Great episode and also, watched An Adventure in Space and Time for the first time. Holy shit that's emotional.

And of course I got a few nerd nitpick moments but still an amazing episode. I really didn't care for Smith too much but he fucking killed it in this episode.

Even though Smith suffered from some bad writing, he saved the show for me. I am sad to see him go.

We also got a fairly decent marker for "at least how long is a normal lifecycle for a Time Lord" thanks to this episode, since we know Twelve had 300+ years subjective in Christmas before being about here for dying of old age. That puts your average Time Lord at a minimum of 3600-4000 subjective years of lifespan, assuming 12 regenerations and no mishaps along the line that'd trigger a regeneration early.

Thinking about it, does this episode contradict The Impossible Astronaut, Let's Kill Hitler, and The Marriage of River Song, as this one definitively establishes that the Eleventh is his last possible incarnation of this particular cycle? In all three of those episodes, it is shown or at least implied that the Doctor would have still been able to regenerate, and while the regeneration in TIA and Marriage were both the Teselecta and not the actual Doctor, he was still putting on a show that would convince everyone that he was dead, so he wouldn't want to do anything that would contradict what the universe would have knowledge of.

Likewise, in Let's Kill Hitler, the TARDIS expressly said that the poison that Melody had used on the Doctor prevented regeneration, suggesting that regeneration would have been possible for him if any other poison had been used. Even discounting the other two episodes, I have a hard time believing that the TARDIS of all beings in the universe would make a mistake like that about the Doctor

i feel like at some point pretty recently moffat decided that "ten regenerating into the same face" would count as one of them, so earlier episodes weren't written accordingly. also with him trying not to acknowledge his John Hurt incarnation you could argue that he was playing along so people didn't ask about the missing regeneration, but yeah I'm pretty sure it's mostly the former.

Hurt Doctor was never supposed to happen but Eccelson fucked that all up. The Doctor using his regeneration energy to heal River's wrist was supposed to be him using his last regeneration.

There's also a fan theory that 11 aged because he was without his Tardis for so long. You have to figure he aged about 300 years over the series without aging a bit (900 to 1200ish), but another 300 without the Tardis and he's halfway to Grandpa.

Sometime during the first 300 years on Trenzalore, Madame Kavorian got tired of the war and broke off a sect with the confessional priests and founded the Church of the Silence to ensure that the Doctor never made it to Trenzalore. Plan A was to board the Tardis, take control and blow it up. It is not exactly known how they were able to do it but one can guess that it was maybe a bomb of some sort. We do know that there was a member of the Silence aboard the Tardis during season 5's episode of "The Lodger" because there are two scenes in particular where you see Amy talking to the Doctor, getting freaked out, and then forgetting moments later. The idea seemed to be if they were able to blow up the Tardis, he would not be able to travel to Trenzalore and cause the Stalemate that forced the Papal Mainframe from staying at Trenzalore for so many centuries. As we know this plan did not work and the Doctor rebooted the universe so Madam Kavorian went with plan B which was to kidnap Amy sometime after Amy and Rory's honeymoon in order to take her child and raise her to kill the Doctor.

I will say though that this episode tied up some of loose ends from Season 5 onward. We now know that:

    • The Silence were originally confessional priests. You confess to them, they use hypnotic suggestion to send you on the right path, and you forget ever confessing
    • Confirmation that the Silence blew up the Tardis
    • Finally finding out that the Doctor saw a crack behind his door in the God Complex
    • "Silence will Fall" meaning a measure to prevent the Doctor from answering the question to allow the Time Lords through the cracks

I am not a Dr who fan just was forced to watch the Christmas special. 1 issue I hat was the weeping angels. There was like 5 or so of them in the snow... Then they show him tricking 1. What happened to them in the rest of the show / 300 years?

And that's why I can't get into this show, in the words of my obsessed friend "stop poking holes in the show", but I can't.

It's a show about time travel with tons of holes, lots of shit is not explained, if you need a answer the show is probably not for you.

I mean I could drive myself nuts with the last episode and time freezing and what Not.

They mention some shit just gave up, no? I mean it's not elegant but

my issue with the episode was the Truth Field, the Doctor is shown to be incapable of ignoring it but is later shown breaking it by telling Barnable he has a plan when he doesn't

Barnable (well guy 300 yr after Barnable who the Doctor calls Barnable) -- YOU HAVE A PLAN RIGHT?
    The Doctor -- YEP
    *Barnable leaves*
Clara -- You don't have a plan do you
The Doctor -- NOPE, NOT REALLY

did he just learn how to do it after 300 years or w/e

They have been in episodes with them as the main bad guys. Add in Daleks, Cybermen, Space-Catholics and Sontarans and their badassery reduces in direct proportion to the amount of other factions trying to off the Doctor.
