Maybe give a synopsis of wtf the point of this vid is? It's 20 minutes long and so far it's dumb.

TED is a forum for world leaders in all fields to speak about their research, art, or ideas. This video is by a leading MMO developer who defends the utility of MMO's for solving real world problems.

Although its long I think it will be incredibly interesting to those people who have to defend the amount of time they spend on FFXI or other games.

Malcolm Gladwell wrote a book recently called outliers in which he speaks about people who are quite literally virtuosos in their respective field. Bill Gates in programming...The Beatles in Rock & Roll. Gladwell contends that if you put 10,000 hours into an activity (especially at a young age) then you become a virtuoso in that field. Although 10,000 hours seems like a lot, there are probably quite a few people on this board that have reached this status in FFXI. McGonigal explains what that means and the transferability of these skills. Who knows, maybe one day having Maat's cap and a relic weapon could be a legitimate line on your resume =P

Or better yet, successfully leading a LS or other group. There's a lot of people management, time management, points updating (spreadsheets!), decision making etc. skills involved in leading ffxi events that are suitable for including on your CV, though you have to present it well rather than making yourself sound like a nerd. Didn't the guy for the Teletubbies site write something specially for it? Definitely worth including on a CV

First of all FFXI is nowhere near that capacity. You want real world problems solved by an MMO, look at EVE. FFXI just doesn't have anything on that game to even consider comparing it to real world.

Also, the term virtuoso is a bit loose. Sure you could play a FPS for 10,000 hours... That doesn't mean you are good at it. Let alone a virtuoso. I can pick up a FPS and play for 30 minutes, and beat people that have been playing for 6 hours a day for the last year. Also the beatles were not virtuosos in music. They were just the first to play POP music. Very simple cord progressions, lack of depth and drug induced lyrics. You want virtuosos look at classical music, look at Victor Wooten, look at Dizzy Gillespie, look at musicians that actually had a pair. Fuckin beatles.... they were a pop band man.

Well put, this makes a lot of sense. I, for one, can relate to this. As for the rest of it, I guess she has a point but she never really explains how she plans to tap into this inherent motivation and optimism. I suppose those three online games she mentioned at the end are one way of doing it, but good luck trying to get those kinds of things into the mainstream.
