and like I said, not overly knowledgeable and the show presents itself, in my opinion, as being more factual than it is, like it wasn't "well I suppose you could theoretically do this" it was 'this is how you would do it" which is why it sounded so much like talking out of his ass

Actually, the stuff about the parallel universes and infinite Woozie's and Mizango's and such is actually a real possibility according to our laws of physics and the physical make-up of our universe.

This show sounds like he's trying to make impossible stuff become possible by introducing new concepts and ideas that may not necessarily be physically realizable according to our current understanding of the universe. Like I said, that's fine for Sci fi, but I don't want Qal to get the impression that just because Micho Kaku said something on this show means it's a physical possibility according to our current understanding of the universe. Micho Kaku is one of the leading theoretical physicists, and obviously the guy knows what he's talking about, but I've seen him explain science fiction on some occasions, and usually it involves introducing new stuff for the sake of making science fiction work. He may not necessarily be trying to suggest that any of these things may be possible in the real world.

I could be wrong, since I haven't seen this particular show. I'm just going based on what Qal said, and partially based on what I've seen him and other scientist do when they talk about science fiction. It's kind of like how we'll sometimes say "this is actually possible if we bend space this way...", which may be true, but it's not necessarily possible to bend space in the manner in which we speak of.

I don't know if what I'm trying to say made sense. I don't have time to be clear and concise. I've been sitting up for like 30 minutes now and my neck is killing me. This is the longest I've been able to stay up since the pain started. I'm going to take some ibuprofen and lay down for a few minutes, and I'll correct some stuff when I get back.

Okay, here's an example of what I think is going on here

If someone were to ask me how to time travel backwards in time, I could probably come up with an answer. It may involve flying a space craft through a rotating black hole, and exiting through a white hole in another universe, and then re-entering our universe at any point in space time of my choosing by finding an appropriate black hole and flying through in the appropriate way (since a rotating black hole has a ring singularity, it's technically possible to enter the black hole without being crushed into the singularity). I could probably mathematical find out exactly how to do all of this too, if I felt like it.

But the part about flying through the black hole would probably depend on having a physically impossible spaceship. It would have to fly at physically impossible speeds, endure incredible forces, and the humans inside would have to be able to survive all of this. Being able to use this black hole as a gateway to another universe relies on unproven (and likely unprovable) theories, and it would also require advanced knowledge of another universe (if black holes are the only gateways to another universe, then knowledge of the other universes is probably unknowable unless there's a white hole in our universe connected to the other one. And this assumes white holes even exist. And if they do exist, it also assumes we can extract a certain amount of information from them to know enough about the other universe to get us there safely. And then there's the problem of making sure we enter the correct universe. If there are an infinite number of parallel universes, then the probability of us entering the right one could be 1 divided by infinity. But this all depends on which unprovable theory we're using).

Assuming we don't enter the other universe at the interior of a star or some other spot that would result in instant death, then we'd need to be able to find an appropriate entry point into our universe (again, with a probability of 1/infinity) that leads us to the desired point in space time.

So although I can make calculations and such based on real physics, there are certain parts where I have to throw in some stuff that may or may not be physically impossible. So if I were to tell someone this, I would not intend for them to take it too seriously. Even though it is based on real physics, technically it's still a bunch of BS. If I were telling someone this, I'd expect them to understand that I'm just trying to make science fiction work. Not that I'm suggesting we could ever do any of this in real life.

That's what I suspect is going on here. Physicist love to imagine science fiction type scenarios, but we don't necessarily want to imply that any of this is physically realizable.

The difference between what we were talking about on MSN and this stuff is that what we were talking about on MSN could possibly be true without having to throw in any extra BS. It's a very real possibility that according to our laws of physics, Colenzo and Islader really are d'Albret and Henry V in some alternate universe and are battling. I personally don't think this is the case, but there's nothing impossible in the theory that could give us reason to rule it out. And it may not be unprovable (some variations of the theory are testable).

So yeah, I don't mean to indicate that Micho Kaku doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm saying he doesn't intend to be taken too seriously in what he's saying.

By the way, Miz, you never answered my question in the LHC thread. What specific area of comsology will you be focusing on? Do you have any idea what you want to write your thesis or dissertation on? And are you going to become a professor when you're done? It would be so awesome if we were professors at the same college some day lol
