PS3 suddenly does not like my HDTV

Ok so... played FF13 last night, was fine. Even streamed a movie on netflix yesterday, worked perfectly. Tonight I turn it on to play 13 again (damned missions) and the PS3 wont display on the HDTV.

I did nothing to cables, tv, ps3, etc between 12 last night and 9 tonight. Yet no picture, only sound. I tried following the instructions on the Sony troubleshooting website.

I have done everything from resetting my system display settings via holding down the on button for 5 seconds. I tried using the shitty analog cables to try and swap onto HDMI like the site says. Hell, I even went and set it up on the newer HD tv in the family room and made sure to downgrade from 1080p to 1080i so it would display on this tv. However, nothing has worked.

My tv is an old Philips Plasma that runs up to 1080i res from a few years back. Any suggestions on how to get it to display via the HDMI like it has done for the past several weeks?

I know it says you follow instructions on the sony site....

    but did you;

Leave your PS3 in standby mode, and hold down the power button to turn it on (continue holding it) until you hear a second beep, then release the power button.

Doing so, makes the PS3 kind of auto-detect the HDMI cord while resetting the audio/video settings.

Try using component...I had this same exact issue, the HDMI port on my PS3 just entirely stopped working, no picture, but still got sound(coincidently...or not? well playing 13 as well), but component still works fine.

It could also be an issue with your TV itself, PS3 requires a HDCP handshake, so several things could of went bad in your TV as well, I'd test another TV first at a friends or anywhere you have access(sounds? like you already did that), and if not the port probably went.

In which case just switch to component, despite what 10 billion internet posters will swear up and down about because they're functionally retarded and see what they want to see, there is no significant visual difference between HDMI and component. Paying $150 to get the HDMI port just isn't worth it unless something else goes that makes the system non-functioning.

Though if it's under warranty anyways, just get it repaired.

The PS3 connects fine to my other HDTV in the family room @1080p. However, it suddenly does not want to have picture on the tv it had a perfectly fine connection to as recently as last night. So the HDMI port is fine. I can connect via the cheap included analog 480i yellow cable connectio and it will work fine. However, wtf did I buy this thing for if I can only play with it in shitty connection.

The tv obviously sees "something" as after connecting it to the TV and setting up the display settings correctly for the TV I want to use it on, it now lists the screen res as 1080i instead of 480p. Yet still no picture.

its probably the port/s on your TV. try using something else with HDMI on that tv. If the ps3 is working on another tv with hdmi, its not the ps3.

The HDMI from the cable box works in both ports. I guess it could be the HDMI cable, but I have a lot of trouble believing that the cable would go bad within the few hours between it working and now.

Your cable box 99% likely doesn't require a HDCP handshake, if you know someone, hook up another PS3 or any commercial bluray player to the same ports on the TV and see if they work, if they don't, it's very likely that the chip that handles HDCP(which is a different one from HDMI) went bad in your TV. That would be the most likely cause of your PS3 not working with that specific TV.

If not, then who the fuck knows ;0

So yeah, thanks for all the advice. In the end I went out and got a new cable (needed one for the other room anyway). When I went to change it out, I said "fuck it, gonna turn it on and see." Well it works now, mysteriously after 10 hours of being turned off, it just works.

After reading a few things, I am guessing it was the Philips TV. There seems to be some sort of common malfunction in the resolution recognition or some bullshit.
