BG school poll: Do you wash your hands after you potty?

I have to write a short 3 page paper on handwashing. Assignment:

• You must spend a total of 1 hour in AT LEAST 15 minute increments in a public restroom of your choice (Wal-Mart is always a good choice). During that time, you must make a note of the number of people who enter, and how many of those wash their hands prior to leaving. This data will be included in your paper
• You must cite a minimum of 2 resources for the information you put in the body of your paper (one may be your textbook). ALL resources must be scholarly or peer reviewed (so a scholarly textbook, website, journal, etc - Wikipedia will NOT count).
• You must use APA style formatting for all of your work (see http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ for more information).
• Your paper must be no LESS than 3 pages, and no MORE than 4 pages in length for the BODY (title page and reference page do NOT count).
• Your paper should be typed, double-spaced, use Times New Roman font - size 12, and have 1 inch margins throughout.
• For the body of your paper, you will discuss the topic of "Handwashing and the Spread of Disease" (you may use whatever title you like).

I don't really care to sit in a bathroom and watch people, so I'll use the results here.

She said the thesis can be open, it just has to topic hand washing. Most of my peers will sandbag this and just turn in results and talk about why we should handwash. I'd at least like to make it interesting, even if it is illogical. I want to compare handwashing to income levels.

You don't have to tell me the study is flawed, I already know. The setup for the assignment is flawed.

I do NOT at home. I usually do when I'm out. income ~$50,000 a year.

I wash my hands 100% of the time anywhere but in my house.. where I generally only wash my hands 50/50 of the time.

Student, unemployed. Wash before/after using public restrooms, and like Soda, I don't touch any handles.

At home, I run them under water unless they feel dirtier than usual. In public I use soap most of the time. At work I use water mostly because the soap they use gives me a rash. ~60k/year.

Because she gave "wal-mart" as an example of where to camp handwashers. This led me to think that the percentage of people who hand wash would be different depending on where you are. For instance, I would think less people are likely to wash their hands at mcdonalds than at ruth's chris. There's huge differences between the consumers of each product. One's fast food where the consumer may be in a hurry, and the other is possibly income levels. Income level is much more interesting.

I do 90% of the time while away from home. If i hit the bar i try to not touch the knobs again after my hands are clean. Gogo paper towels on door handles!

Oh, I thought it was just an arbitrary question that was necessary, not part of your thesis, lol. I think the design would be flawed, some people might be more influenced to wash their hands if someone is there than when no one is. Also, might wanna add a hand sanitizer option as I know quite a few people who would just grab hand sanitizer if it was available but I dunno if that would fit your thesis well/at all.

And again, yes, I know it's flawed. THe assignment explained in class was like this:

"Go into a bathroom and get into a corner with a clipboard and tally up those who wash their hands".

That's a terrible way to perform a study, if I didn't wash my hands typically, I sure as hell would if some kid was watching me from the corner with a clipboard. I don't think she's as interested in the results.

I wash my hands if I have to shit, if I only need to piss, well, I don't piss on my hands, if I need to resort to a stall because urinals are all full I'll wash hands if handle must be touched.

Not all places offer hand anitizer, so I don't want to get into a bunch of variables. It's a short 3 page paper, I just want to do something outside of the "80% of people washed their hands, 20% are stupid", which is what 95% of the class will do.
