The Cosmic Cube is actually a containment device created by various civilizations throughout the Marvel Universe at various times, including the Skrulls (creators of the Cube that would eventually evolve into the Shaper of Worlds), and various other, unnamed civilizations... * Past and Future: 90% of the film takes place during the period 1939-1945, but the beginning and end of the feature film takes place today ...
* The first scene of the film: As an introduction, we see an exploration team discovered the remains of a giant bomber under the snows of the Arctic. Flashback (true beginning of the film): attack on a village in Norway (Hansberg) by troops from Hydra. Johann Scmidt is present (Skull), who has a passion for Nordic mythology. He looks for an object, the Cube [as seen in the Comic Con footage]
* The Skull is a former Nazi party member who left to found the organization Hydra. His vehicle is a car which is nine feet long, shielded and armed ... Hydra's secret base is located in the Alps, and he worked on controlling the energy of the Cube. The Cube is able to open a portal to "other dimensions of space-time. His "human" face is just a mask hiding his true appearance: Red Skull.
* Steve Rogers is a young man puny victim of mockery by thugs in Brooklyn. The body of actor Chris Evans will be digitally processed to give it that look. Steve is already friends with Bucky Barnes [his sidekick in the film]. Unlike Steve, he was accepted into the army and he was preparing to leave.
* The return of Stark: The two friends visit an exhibition in New York, "The world of tomorrow." Among the exhibitors? Howard Stark [Tony's father]. There is a showcasing of anti-gravity boots, which only have a fraction of the energy of the cube. Stark Sr. will create the shield of Cap.
* After his transformation, Steve Rogers is used as a mascot in cinema, theater and performing in a music hall. He became a celebrity, while remaining down to earth, once sent to Europe, where he learns that Bucky was captured in a weapons factory in the Hydra. During this first mission, he frees a group that will become the Invaders.
* The final scene: The Red Skull's purpose is to build a carrier style bomber, containing planes carrying bombs, which are destined for London and U.S. cities. There will be a great battle between the Red Skull and Captain America in the plane which eventually crashed in the Arctic.
* Captain America 2: Heinrichs evokes the possibility of a film blending the past and the present [as the current Ed Brubaker stories show]. Especially at a time of the interview, he speaks of the Hydra as an organization still in existence, and Nick Fury is fighting still fighting against it.

Captain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, Haley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Dominic Cooper Toby Jones and Neal McDonough. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 22nd, 2011.

Yeah but at least with Cap. Marvel owns the rights to the movie. I think Universal or Paramount or whatever owns the rights to the Ghost Rider movies, and they can do whatever they want.Same thing with those Punisher movies. I think the rights expired on those, and Marvel has them back and can now do it however it likes. So I would fully expect to see another Punisher reboot in a couple years. Even though it didn't fit the storyline for the most part, I liked the second one (first being with Dolph) with Tom Jane.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: This is your second comic book-based movie, The Rocketeer having been the first. Is it a genre that you're enjoying and is it one you'd like to visit again?

JOE JOHNSTON: Technically, THE ROCKETEER was based on a one-off graphic novel, but there are similarities. I'm having a blast on Captain America but it has less to do with the genre than with the story itself. The story of Steve Rogers is the only "super hero" movie I ever really wanted to do, because of who he is...basically Everyman. The creative team on Captain America also wanted to prove that a period action movie can still work just as well as a modern day or futuristic one. I forget I'm watching a period film when I watch Raiders of the Lost Ark, and I think the same will be true of this picture. To Marvel's credit, they have never said no to any of the action sequences, and several of them are pretty spectacular...and most importantly they service a solid story.

SCIFI MEDIA ZONE: I know a great deal of time has gone into crafting the Super Bowl spot for the film. How much pressure is there to deliver what is essentially the world's first look at this movie?

JOE JOHNSTON: It IS the world's first look at the film, but at some point you have to put that pressure aside and just concentrate on making it the best Super Bowl spot it can be. The challenge is really what to leave in and what to leave out when you only have 30 seconds, and the marketing people at Paramount have done a stellar job of finding that balance. I think it will give the world just the right taste of what the film is without giving away too much. You will definitely get a sense of how rich the imagery is and how intense the action, and it will whet your appetite for the two and a half minute trailer coming soon.

Dominic Cooper has revealed new details about Howard Stark, being a ladies man and how he helps Steve Rogers become Captain America.

He hints at what we'll find out in the movie saying;

"We learn the whole idea of where Stark Industries comes from, which is out of pure curiosity and creative juices and excitement towards thinking of the future and developing things for good. He’s a Howard Hughes. He’s a guy that loves inventing, that’s extremely intelligent, and that loves his lifestyle as well."

He's lets us know if he's a playa like his son Tony;

"Absolutely. You’re never quite sure where he’s been or where he’s just come from. And it’s always like he’s just come from somewhere in a tuxedo, from showing people his inventions and his new flying machines. He’s great fun."

He's ask if his character is important in the movie;

"He’s important because he’s part of the machinery that helps Captain America manipulate his body."

Cooper is asked if Stark is a father at this point;

"No, he’s still a young man with lots of ambition in an extremely exciting time."

Finally he's asked if he gets to do any stunts in the movie, with a short and simple response;

"Um, no."

On Super Bowl Sunday we'll get our first look at Captain America: The First Avenger but that's not all. We'll also get the Captain America: First Vengeance digital comic. The 8 issue digital series debuts this Sunday and the first episode will be available for FREE at captainamerica.com. It will then be available on the Marvel Comics iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch app starting Tuesday, February 8. The series is written by Fred Van Lente with artwork by Luke Ross, Neil Edwards and colors by Richard Isanove. First Vengeance weaves in and out of the storyline from the movie introducing readers to some newcomers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"When we started launching Marvel Studios and decided these movies were interconnected, we established that it’s going to be a separate movie continuity that, while it exists parallel to the comics and allows us to pick the best moments from all the previous continuities, it needs to be beholden unto itself," explains Stephen Broussard, Co-Producer of "Captain America: The First Avenger." Once we established the premise that we did want to do that and we wanted to make sure it made sense as a cohesive, whole piece, it really sort of freed us up to start asking what other stories would we like to tell. And of course there’s no shortage of interesting ideas for all that. Basically anything that we really loved but didn't necessarily have a place in the film is fair game."

"It doesn’t really cover one particular place," he elaborates. "There's a little bit of backstory, there's a little bit of parallel action going on to the movie, and there's a little bit of hints of things to come. But it's all sort of jumbled up in this really satisfying way where you feel like you're getting to walk around the whole piece and see the story from the different angles. That's what's really most interestig about this, it's an opportunity to dig deeper into things that are exciting about the movie that you want to know about, or that are only hinted at between the lines in the movie. It's an opportunity to really bring that all to the surface."

Broussard is also hoping that First Vengeance will give the loyal Captain America readers a deeper relationship and understanding to the film. He goes on to say;

"For a lot of people, they"ve lived with Steve Rogers for decades, so they really do feel like they know him already, So it’s just another opportunity to continue fleshing him out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe the way he has been in the standard comics universe for years."

"There are lots of little side stories along the way that would be fascinating if we could stop and listen to them, but just really don't fit into the structure of the story we’re telling," offers Broussard. "What this does, is it allows us to do that. We hear talk about Steve's parents in the film. What was his relationship like with them? That’s something we explore in the first issue. We know that Steve and Bucky have been best friends for a long time, but what was it like when they first met? How did their relationship grow and deepen through the years? All of which is fascinating territory to cover, and it’s great to have an outlet that lets us do all that."

Veteran Marvel Universe writer Fred Van Lente also had a few things to add about the series and his excitement for the films release on July 22nd;

"The relationship between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for example, is very different, and in a very cool way," says the writer, explaining the differences. "And what's neat about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just like in the comics' universe, is the interconnections between various movies, particularly 'Iron Man 2' and 'Thor.' You'll start to see those coming out in FIRST VENGEANCE."

"Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada and producer Stephen Broussard have been looking over each one of my scripts, keeping me locked in with the vision of the film, and it's been hugely rewarding," Van Lente comments. "Given the way we're launching this comic, out of a Super Bowl spot, it has a chance to really expand the visibility of the comics medium so everyone, from Joe and Stephen on down to me and the artists, are really trying to give people an exciting reading experience they'll never forget--that will both be great unto itself and also enhance their viewing of the film when they go and see it."

"I read the script last fall and just thought it was terrific. Now, as we're working on the art for the book, having seen all the stills and tech and costumes, it's really got me jazzed. I think this really will go down as one of the classic super hero films."

According to Captain America director Joe Johnston James "Bucky" Barnes isn't going to be the sidekick we all thought he was going to be in Captain America: The First Avenger. Apparently they gave this Bucky a much darker edge. According to the director this won’t be your grandfather’s idea of a superhero sidekick.

Sebastian brought something really interesting and slightly on the dark side and really compelling to watch — when he’s on camera, you’re fascinated by watching him. In a great cast, I thought he really stood out and brought some unexpected things to the role. Everyone brought something to the movie and a lot of them brought something great but I was most pleasantly surprised by what Chris brought and what Sebasatian brought in a much smaller role as Bucky.

This sounds incredibly intriguing. I'm glad they went with the gritty Band of Brothers route. I really wasn't expecting to see a dark side to Bucky in this movie, but I will welcome the change because it may make the character much more compelling. When Johnson was asked about it he said,

Sebastian has a dark, slightly quirky side to him — and that’s the case when he’s in character or not — and he brought that to this movie.

You know, he was originally up for the lead, for the Steve Rogers role, but he didn’t have quite the same earnest, I-want-to-fight-for-my-country aura that Chris has for this role. Sebastian has a little bit of the bad boy, he’s a little bit of the James Dean type and that goes somewhat counter to the general perception of Steve Rogers. He wasn’t quite right for Captain America, but I think he’s perfect for Bucky because, really, he can have a little bit of that dark side.

Johnson goes on to talk about how the relationship between Captain America and bucky has changed as well.

We took some liberties with the relationship between the two guys. In our story, Bucky is already in the service, he’s already joined up and is being sent overseas while Steve is still struggling to get in the army. That’s different than what you may have read in the comics. It adds a nuance to the relationship that pays off later. They’re closer in age, too — they’re virtually the same age. That’s not the case at all if you go back to the old comics.

I really like this new dynamic to the characters. It definitely makes the relationship a lot more interesting, and gives everyone something fun and original to play with. According to the LA Times "both Rogers and Barnes are orphans and grow up almost as brothers. Rogers is too sickly to enlist in the service and instead he volunteers for a dangerous and secret experiment that might make him the first of an army of super-soldiers. That fact changes the physics of his friendship with Bucky, and the movie jettisons the hero’s almost paternal treatment of Bucky. This version of Bucky Barnes is less wise-cracking and more of a crack shot with his service rifle."

Comicvine seemed to be taking issue of cap not wearing his mask/helmet in the poster. I don't know, it looks great to me!

I will say my biggest problem with the outfit are the shoulders tend to be "pointy" at times.
