What the fuck am I even reading? Captain America is one of the staples of Marvel. I didn't like the 60's/80's Cap stuff, but the more recent stuff is pretty good. He's a man who believes in his nation. To quote him from a more recent comic...

'All my life, I fought to become a symbol. A symbol of all the things that were right about this country. All the things I loved. And now, they're trying to turn that symbol into whatever's most convenient , whatever will best serve the political agenda of one side or another... They don't understand. It was never about politics. It was never about me. It was about the country. It was always about the country. But they can't hear that truth above their own voices."

Him speaking to Thor after Thor summons his spirit. If you can't appreciate that, I don't know what to tell you. Captain America to me in the more recent years has become one of my favorite characters. Leading the rebels in the Civil War and everything. And he can give the Hulk a run for his money. The Hulk. He'll still always get beat, but he can put up a better fight than most.

Remember that scene in the more recent Hulk where Blonsky first takes on the Hulk after taking the Super Soldier serum? If the Hulk really is one of the (if not the) major bad guys in The Avengers, I think Cap fighting him will look like that, only better. And yeah. He's got a fucking shield. Made of adamantium.

You know what? I'm sure the comics can do him some justice in over arching stories, where his indomitable spirit and unwavering patriotism could be used to some great dramatic and even artistic effect, but in a two and a half (give or take) block buster? Starring Chris Evans?

    Really?

    Debatable.

Was Superman 4 better than just doing nothing for ninety minutes of your life?

Why are we even mentioning Superman 4? >_>

I wasn't totally convinced of Chris Evans when I saw the selection. The first thing that ran through my mine was "He's the Human Torch" But seeing as how they're gonna reboot FF anyway, it doesn't matter. But the idea of one guy playing 2 heroes is a bit strange. Anyway, Chris Evans definitely has the charisma and personality to lead. Captain America lead? I don't know. Captain America when he comes in a room is pretty much the dominant character and take command. Can Chris do this? It remains to be seen. I'm sure it won't be immediate in this movie. He'll eventually become a leader. The scenes of him charging in are pretty cool, but we need to see more than 2 seconds of any one scene. There will probably be some squabbling between the Avengers in the beginning as Iron Man/Tony Stark likes to be the leader. So that should be interesting to see.

To be fair, I tdidn't think Chris Hemsworth would make a good Thor. But after seeing a good 5+ minutes of footage, I think he'll be okay. Everyone was skeptical of RDJ as Iron Man when he was first cast. Look how that turned out. So give the guy a chance is all I'm saying. He could surprise us all.

Cap's death brought me back to reading Marvel for the first time in 15 years. He's still my favorite character as he was when I was a little kid, but I understand a lot better now why he has such appeal. Cap is the man-crush of every other super hero in the Marvel world. In the words of Falcon "He was like that sainted can-do-no-wrong big brother, the guy you can't help but look up to because you just know you can never be that good... or that strong in the face of horror."

The one thing I didn't like though is how Civil War ended. Cap was a person of principle, that's the whole reason he led the resistance. He didn't believe registration was right. And he suddenly gives it up because some people side with Iron Man?

He said this to Spiderman when Spidey first defected to the anti-registration side: "Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree besides the river of truth, and tell the whole world: No, *you* move."

Really? RDJ was *spot on* casting. Casting him for Stark is like casting Clooney as a suave older man. There is no acting actually involved just script reading.

Though I'm not American I always though Cap was one of the coolest characters. Chris Evans is just casting gone horribly wrong in my opinion. He comes of as an asshole just by looking at him.

Cap America can only fight against Hulk due to PIS, its like Batman beating up Superman even though Superman can fly thorugh planets and move at the speed of light.

    Its not adamantium, its vibranium.

Well I guess so with the shield. There was that whole debate over the years what it was really made out of. I think Marvel tried to retcon it at one point, and made it vibranium. People still debated it after that. Personally I don't care which it is. They're both great fictional metals. :D

I dunno, I think Evans is perfect for Captain America depending on how he chooses to act. If this is an early Cap, similar to early Spidey, then we can expect a hotshot "Oh lol look at me I so awesome" with a rude awakening coming. He's the right age to be in a "just now joining the army" or "been in the army and sucked" kind of state.

After seeing Ledger in Batman, I'm not ruling any casting choices out of Marvel's current run of movies. They have done a really good job so far. Until I see something happen like what happened with X-Men, I'm not going to question their decisions.

For those of you who knows Chris Evans only by Fantastic Four and thinks he can't act beyond being a typical asshole pretty boy, go check out Sunshine. He's not Ed Norton, but the guy definitely knows more than one role.

Plus Sunshine is one of the coolest Sci-Fi I've seen in recent years, so it wouldn't be a waste of your time regardless.

so true, I completely agree. He is a great actor and that movie is a good example.

I know I'll be made fun of but if you haven't seen it, not another teen movie is another film he's been in. He's pretty funny in it.
