Nintendo Announces DS Successor ~ 3DS (Backwards Compatible)

Sharp will be providing parallax barrier LCD screens needed to display the 3D imagery for the console. The 3DS screens are speculated to be no larger than four inches and the two cameras found on DSi units will once again be used with one facing the player and the other on the lid of the unit.

Other significant upgrades include better battery life, faster Wi-Fi speeds, vibration function, and something called a "3D control stick" with no details on what it looks like or how it works. We'll update with more details as they become available.

Today, the Sharp Corporation has announced that the company has been developing a new 3D LCD touchscreen, with an industry-high brightness setting and the ability to switch between 2D and 3D modes. Notably, Sharp's new 3.4 inch display achieves its 3D effect without the use of special glasses, raising this as a possible component of the recently announced Nintendo 3DS.

Sharp's new touchscreen uses the parallax barrier system, which a layer of material embedded with vertical slits is placed in front of a normal LCD screen. This parallax barrier controls the path of light from the LCD screen towards the left and right eyes, presenting a 3D image and a sense of depth to the viewer. Additionally, Sharp's new LCD also has the capability to display its 3D images in both portrait and landscape screen orientations. Sharp attributes the capabilities of their new touchscreen to advances in their homegrown CG-Silicon technology. To accompany their new product, a non-touchscreen version of the company's new display has also been developed.

Sharp will begin the mass production of its new 3D LCD the first half of their 2010 fiscal year, which coincides with the pending unveiling of Nintendo's new handheld, the Nintendo 3DS at the E3 Expo in June. Could the 3DS be using Sharp's new touchscreen?

Nintendo was recently forced to make a hasty paper announcement for its mysterious 3DS, a new handheld boasting screens with built-in 3D technology that don't require special eyewear. Additional details are expected to remain slim until the days leading to this year's E3 (ground zero for the official 3DS unveiling), but initial reports had noted that the 3D in the Sharp-designed screens is attributed to a unique parallax scrolling visual effect.

One thing is certain, Nintendo won't be treating the 3DS as just another iteration of its DS handheld. In an interview with Bloomberg, Nintendo of America's president Reggie Fils-Aime confirms the 3DS will officially be their next generation platform for handheld gaming, like the transition from the GameBoy product line to the DS.

When quizzed about the stronger competition which the 3DS will find itself facing, particularly from Apple's App Store and free to mostly-free social network gaming, Fils-Aime is confident that Nintendo still has the content support where it counts:

"Fundamentally, this business is about software, not hardware. Software is what drives engagement by the consumer. For us technology is not the end, it’s the means to an end, which is around a great consumer experience."

Nintendo's 3DS announcements are still scheduled for this coming E3 in June. That's when we'll likely be treated to both launch and pricing info for the new handheld, in addition to the launch library.

Supports 3D effects without the need for special glasses? Is it going to generate holograms or something. <_>

Nintendo was forced make an early announcement for their 3DS after leaks confirmed the company is cooking up a new handheld stereoscopic 3D screen, and they live up to their promise by showcasing the hardware itself at the company's E3 2010 presentation today. The 3DS as it stands doesn't look terribly different from existing DSi hardware, and it's nearly the same size. Nintendo's press release notes that the final look for the 3DS could be subject to change.

New to the 3DS is an additional outer camera for taking 3D pictures, a built-in motion sensor and gyroscope, a flat analog joystick on the lower face called the "Slide Pad" to faciliate 360-degree control input, and a slider toggle at the side of the handheld to help control 3D depth (or turn the feature off completely). The top screen of the 3DS is also slightly larger at 3.53", serving to showcase stereoscopic 3D that won't require any additional eyewear to enjoy. However, the bottom screen has reduced in size to 3.02" versus the 3.25" screen on the DSi.

Though previously touted at the next big pillar in the Nintendo temple of hardware, the 3DS will still be backward compatible with existing DS and DSi software. So when is all of this coming out? We don't know... so hopefully Nintendo won't keep us all in the dark for long!

If that turns out to be as cool as it sounds, sign me the fuck up.

It probably won't, but I can still hope for it.

Something else to do while stoned/drunk,ect. Interesting, although I'd rather have a DS with better sound quality, and overall, I'd rather have a handheld system that can freakin buffer the internals from shock and vibrations so I could actually hear some bass with the washed out songs.

Drives me crazy that every time I hook my DC up to my PC surround sound, its like a whole new world that I'm missing out on with the music.

I am just curious how they're gonna do it. Maybe some kind of built in camera + headtracking technology or something. Either way, I half expect this to go the way of the Virtual Boy.

maybe make the screens out of multiple layers so its kinda like putting a little "visor" over the screen?

Either way, not really looking that much forward to it :\. I dont think 2011 needs another DS, it would need something beyond a DS ((something like a nintendo version of itouch with accelerometers, camera(thats at least as good as my cell phone), and idk, better graphics i guess?))

Edit: and tony hawk's motion doesnt count

I dread to think how big this will be if they want to do this effectively.

Very intrigued to see what this thing can really do. 3D without glasses seems really... odd sounding. Maybe 3D perspective on the screen? No idea. Another rumor is that it's GPU is about as powerful as the Gamecube, which would really be something. You'd probably have to charge the battery every 2 hours haha. I am also hoping (but doubting) my Acekard still works in it since it is backwards compat.

Finally a successor to the Virtual Boy. Nintendo sure did hold out on us, but I'm certain all the extra dev time will make it that much more awesome.

There is that revently released Japanese WiiWare game called Hidden Pictures. Can't post links (I will in a bit if no one else has) but I would bet that is the "3D" they are planning...

The new DS is going to use the Tegra(2?) platform by all accounts, since Nintendo recently struck a deal with Nvidia for a large purchase of their mobile chips.

The next DS will thus have a GPU greater than what is currently in the 360 and PS3, lolz.

even if that is the case, would nintendo even use the whole of that hardware for kind of games its first party studio puts out? Not even going to say developers in general. Nintendo would probably be the only developer that would even consider spending the money on using the hardware on NEW New super mario bros, Zelda 10 and 6th generation Pokemon

Was just about to come here to post this. This is a title that is actually out in Japan called Rittai Kakushi e Attakoreda. It's a DSiWare game made by the people who made Wario Land: Shake It! Like Kiarax insightfully mentioned earlier, it does in fact use head tracking via the on board camera to achieve the 3D effect. Similar to the 3D suggested by that guy with the wii head tracking stuff.
