I would be a lot more excited about this if they weren't releasing new DSs every six months to a year with minor iterations that could have and probably should have been included when it was launched (the XL isn't even out yet with this announced). Handhelds aren't game franchises. I invest money into them to use them for years, not replace them every November; I don't need a collect of DSs around my house because each year they forgot to add something to the last one.

That being said, the 3DS looks absolutely amazing with the potential it has.

This is exactly how people felt about the touch screen. I welcome the '3D' being introduced, it could be a really cool way to developers to be creative with games in the future.

Is the DS going to be one those third pillars they love to talk about?

Magus that is how they felt about the touch screen, and they were exactly right.

i find it ironic that they would enhance the 3D visual capability on a handheld with backward compatibility for a system that cannot even put out decent 3D polygon counts for its day.

Do we have any idea what the battery life is like with that platform? The main thing Nintendo got right with the DS was an acceptable battery life, albeit the hardware was weak as shit.

    Update~

Sharp will be providing parallax barrier LCD screens needed to display the 3D imagery for the console. The 3DS screens are speculated to be no larger than four inches and the two cameras found on DSi units will once again be used with one facing the player and the other on the lid of the unit.

Other significant upgrades include better battery life, faster Wi-Fi speeds, vibration function, and something called a "3D control stick" with no details on what it looks like or how it works. We'll update with more details as they become available.

Fuck yes, if they have wireless G (maybe N?) support and fucking WPA instead of WEP-only, I'm already sold just to use it as a new DS.

Tired of having to fuck with my router every time I want to use wifi.

Honestly, the appeal of 3-D for me is immersion value.

Problem here is, the DS screen is still fucking tiny. I can't see it being much other than a visual gimmick, unless they somehow crank the screen resolution to a pristine clean state as if I were looking into a window frame. Shit won't be popping out close to my face (even it that abuses the effect somewhat and makes it look gimmicky) when the object in question hits the side of the screen.

'eh, for a game like that it could be easily just as done with analog camera controls, nothing really special about it aside from it 'looking' 3D due to the image tracking implementation.

I still would love to buy a virtual boy off of eBay. I had fun playing one back in the day but the red color only really hurt the system. When I think of the 3d modeling stuff with head tracking, I recall a youtube video of some guy who used a wii remote to make stuff look 3d. I'd look up the url but alas, work blocks youtube here.

btw, looking at your location, demosthenes, I just moved to Halethorpe a few months ago from Elkridge lol.

There are several MD'ers on BG, and I dont think any of us are on the same server at all lol.

Back to the 3DS, I am intrigued about the "3D control stick". Having an analog style stick on a portable system will make for some nice possibilities for controlling certain kind of games, i.e. FPS. I just hope that its a stick rather than the nub that a PSP has.

This is the video about head tracking that would be the basis for glasses-less 3D that I was talking about in an earlier post.

My bad. As I have said in an earlier post, I cant see youtube videos at work, so if its embedded on a post, all I see is a blank spot. No need to backseat moderate.

Today, the Sharp Corporation has announced that the company has been developing a new 3D LCD touchscreen, with an industry-high brightness setting and the ability to switch between 2D and 3D modes. Notably, Sharp's new 3.4 inch display achieves its 3D effect without the use of special glasses, raising this as a possible component of the recently announced Nintendo 3DS.

Sharp's new touchscreen uses the parallax barrier system, which a layer of material embedded with vertical slits is placed in front of a normal LCD screen. This parallax barrier controls the path of light from the LCD screen towards the left and right eyes, presenting a 3D image and a sense of depth to the viewer. Additionally, Sharp's new LCD also has the capability to display its 3D images in both portrait and landscape screen orientations. Sharp attributes the capabilities of their new touchscreen to advances in their homegrown CG-Silicon technology. To accompany their new product, a non-touchscreen version of the company's new display has also been developed.

Sharp will begin the mass production of its new 3D LCD the first half of their 2010 fiscal year, which coincides with the pending unveiling of Nintendo's new handheld, the Nintendo 3DS at the E3 Expo in June. Could the 3DS be using Sharp's new touchscreen?
