Well obviously shooting pictures in 3-D will create a better 2D photo.

When I first read "backwards compatible" I got the impression it would be able to support playing older, non-DS games on it (like the first generation DS allowed you to play Gameboy Advanced games on it).

Eh, oh well, I'll just stick to playing the older ones on the GB Advanced or Super Gameboy (yup, I still have an SNES and Super Gameboy).

Other then that, that looks pretty nifty. It's just lacking the goggles and mono red color.

What do you mean fake, if that is the new one it looks pretty nice. Otherwise I can't read the JP so a summary would be nice.

The only thing that really screams fake at me is the scanner. Is it even possible to have a scanner/camera held within the actual display itself?

I would welcome that huge ugly-as-hell handheld with open arms.

I need someone to not care about making handhelds fit in your pocket. I only like them for not needing to be in the same room each time and taking up my TV. I hope the next one is as big as a laptop and ugly as shit.

    All heil the Atari Lynx.

Long as they keep the folding design I'm happy.

PSP was fucking annoying having to clean the screen every other time I wanted to use it.

    Not much new info, but it's something;

    Tuesday 13th April 2010
Nintendo was recently forced to make a hasty paper announcement for its mysterious 3DS, a new handheld boasting screens with built-in 3D technology that don't require special eyewear. Additional details are expected to remain slim until the days leading to this year's E3 (ground zero for the official 3DS unveiling), but initial reports had noted that the 3D in the Sharp-designed screens is attributed to a unique parallax scrolling visual effect.

One thing is certain, Nintendo won't be treating the 3DS as just another iteration of its DS handheld. In an interview with Bloomberg, Nintendo of America's president Reggie Fils-Aime confirms the 3DS will officially be their next generation platform for handheld gaming, like the transition from the GameBoy product line to the DS.

When quizzed about the stronger competition which the 3DS will find itself facing, particularly from Apple's App Store and free to mostly-free social network gaming, Fils-Aime is confident that Nintendo still has the content support where it counts:

"Fundamentally, this business is about software, not hardware. Software is what drives engagement by the consumer. For us technology is not the end, it’s the means to an end, which is around a great consumer experience."

Nintendo's 3DS announcements are still scheduled for this coming E3 in June. That's when we'll likely be treated to both launch and pricing info for the new handheld, in addition to the launch library.

It was pretty much implied when "backward compatibility" was listed as a feature of Nintendo's new 3DS handheld back in March. But it's good to hear that 3D gameplay can be easily switched off, direct from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, when headaches or nausea set in during marathon sessions. This should also ease concerns from parents over any adverse effects that long term exposure to parallax barrier gameplay could have on their children's developing eyes. Besides, a 2D mode is desirable in that we expect it to offer a brighter image (especially when viewing off-center), better text reading experience, and a wider angle of view for sharing the display.

Now, we know what you're wondering: what about that new 3.4-inch glasses-less 3D touchscreen display from Sharp, is it 2D switchable? Yup, lending more credibility that we'll see it on the 3DS when the handheld gaming console is fully revealed at E3 next month.

from IGN and no actual sources cited, so consider it rumor/speculation
    How powerful is the 3DS?
Nintendo has not revealed any specs for the 3DS system, but expect it to well surpass the Nintendo DS in visual and processor capabilities. To provide stereoscopic 3D effects the system must have the ability to render each game field twice, one for each of the player's eyes, a technique that will require significant horsepower to produce.

Several developers that have experienced 3DS in its current form have reported, off the record, that it has processing capabilities that far exceed the Nintendo Wii and bring the device with abilities that are close to HD consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

According to several developer sources, the 3DS device is not using the NVIDIA Tegra mobile chipset, a rumor that's been floating around since 2009.

kinda glad I didn't buy a DSi now. Nintendo needs to stop putting out a new version of its handhelds every single goddamn year. I realize this is a new handheld technically, but come on.

the only reason I'd buy a DSi is for DSiware (particularly the sequel to Shantae, holy fucking shit) so I really hope the 3DS can run DSi stuff as well as DS cartridges

if the 3DS can run DSi stuff I might get it. really want to play Metal Torrent. not worth purchasing a slightly-upgraded DS for, but if it's a side benefit of buying a whole new handheld, I would be very happy.

How believable is it that according to the developers, the 3DS "has processing capabilities that far exceed the Nintendo Wii and bring the device with abilities that are close to HD consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360." Does anything in current gen do that or is it just exaggeration? I'm not too knowledgeable on hardware specs but with the difference that there is between iphone and psp games to ds games, it seems strange that in 2 years nintendo could put out something that seems 5 years ahead of the competition.
