I'm not too knowledgeable on hardware specs but with the difference that there is between iphone and psp games to ds games, it seems strange that in 2 years nintendo could put out something that seems 5 years ahead of the competition.
I'll believe it when I see it. The DS was pretty good when it was first released, Nintendo could pull it off, but I'm still slightly skeptical. "Close to HD consoles" seems highly unlikely in a handheld. Who knows, they could surprise everyone at E3 with it.

Technology wise. Graphics aren't amazing on it, but for a handheld, it is pretty decent. I don't even remember what games came out with it, I didn't have one for a while after it came out, so, I'm sure they weren't that great in the beginning.

    Technology wise?

You are making comparisons to consoles right? (Though it suppose it doesn't matter, because "technology-wise" there is the PSP.)

lol, majority of DS launch titles were either GBA+ games, or ports that ran like shit compared to the launch platform.

Only Mario64 looked decent of the launch bunch, but even it was fairly simple looking.

We won't be seeing 360/PS3 graphics on a handheld for quite some time yet unless we want another Game Gear-like handheld that requires a battery pack for its battery pack for more than 30min of play.

[EDIT] And yeah, tech-wise, DS is inferior. Only unique thing about the console was its two CPUs (ARM7 & ARM9 iirc), and that's about it. It was full of odd limitations also thanks to its vid card, along with the dinky amount of RAM it had. PSP in comparison is amazing spec-wise for its time.

    IPAD, BRAH

Well that runs games worst than PS2/Gamecube, judging by the RE4 port.

Oh, I guess it did come out around the same time as the PSP, I was thinking it was much earlier. The PSP was better, DS only really had its touch screen gimmick.

Didn't mention iPad for that reason.

Tried one in a store, and when I saw a game as simple as rotating a rope around a geometric shape not running 60fps I decided to just ignore it.
(part of it could be to blame on the developers part though, as even Plants vs. Zombies ran slow when things got busy, and it's a bloody 2d game)

Granted, the iPad is running what, 1024x768? A lot higher than most 'handhelds' at any rate.

If you read the exact quote I think the person making the quote wanted to point out that the games look better than Wii, moreso than make a comparison with xbox360/ps3. Still, that would make it look at least a little bit better than the PSP, which is pretty impressive I suppose.

Well, given the overhead of having to render the graphics twice, I'm expecting launch-PSP level of graphics, rather than its high-end stuff such as FF7:AC & GoW:Chains of Olympus.

It's a lot to ask of a handheld, especially when you want to maintain a constant 30fps.

    do you mean Crisis Core?

I still think Brave Story is one of the best looking 3d psp games, I think they use a very slight bloom lighting effect to make everything look pretty or something. It's a pretty awesome turn-based rpg too, in case anyone cares.

Also jesus fuck nintendo please release another Chibi Robo game for either wii or 3ds

I never got to play Super Princess Peach D:<

Also launch games for the DS: nintendogs is the only thing you ever need.

meteos disney magic actually had slightly better gameplay than the first meteos IMO, although it was kinda disappointing they didn't use disney music at all for it.

princess peach was such a disappointment. I want Princess Peach 2 to come out with twice the difficulty of NSMB, I'd buy ten copies.

Nintendo was forced make an early announcement for their 3DS after leaks confirmed the company is cooking up a new handheld stereoscopic 3D screen, and they live up to their promise by showcasing the hardware itself at the company's E3 2010 presentation today. The 3DS as it stands doesn't look terribly different from existing DSi hardware, and it's nearly the same size. Nintendo's press release notes that the final look for the 3DS could be subject to change.

New to the 3DS is an additional outer camera for taking 3D pictures, a built-in motion sensor and gyroscope, a flat analog joystick on the lower face called the "Slide Pad" to faciliate 360-degree control input, and a slider toggle at the side of the handheld to help control 3D depth (or turn the feature off completely). The top screen of the 3DS is also slightly larger at 3.53", serving to showcase stereoscopic 3D that won't require any additional eyewear to enjoy. However, the bottom screen has reduced in size to 3.02" versus the 3.25" screen on the DSi.

Though previously touted at the next big pillar in the Nintendo temple of hardware, the 3DS will still be backward compatible with existing DS and DSi software. So when is all of this coming out? We don't know... so hopefully Nintendo won't keep us all in the dark for long!

Probably on the side, where you'll accidentally bump it, in between accidentally turning off the system with the questionably placed power button.
