The Fermis are not going to be able to compete with ATI's cards. Nvidia came to the party too late this generation. We'll find out soon enough though.

In before somebody claims "the magic of PhysX" will make FFXIV run better even on an inferior card.

Guess it's time to change my plans to get a 5850/5870 to one of the new 400series cards... Chances are if Nvidia are getting exclusive interviews and the fact that the PS3 uses an Nvidia based gpu, then the game is going to be optimised better on Nvidia class graphics cards than similar spec'd ATI/AMD.

Also if they put Nvidia's Physx into the game its going to completely gimp the ATI cards performance looking at previous games which use it, unless you use an additional nvidia card for Physx.

It depends on the pricing of these new 400 series cards as well I suppose but if one 400series is cheaper than a 5850/5870 + Physx card (and performs similar) you can bet I'm going to get the 400 series

I'd have to agree with this sentiment. ATI made some huge strides, and they're going to undercut the hell out of their cards, as well.

Of course, as a CG artist, I've got kind of a grudge against Nvidia and their price gouging in general.

I don't remember where, but they have been asked about it before, and only replied with "we can't say anything on that at this time". It was one of the first few interview after the reveal that 14 was gonna be the next online.

Agreed 100%, 3D is a waste of time that hopefully no one will care about as soon as the newest box office movies with it flop for being way more horrible at implementing it than Avatar.

While I agree that 3D TV in its current form isn't great, with the slew of 3D tv's coming out this year and television services starting to broadcast in 3D this year (April 3rd in the UK) don't expect it to go away any time soon.

After all, the benefits of going from 1080p resolution to 4k2k resolutions in most households will be negligible to most people, but going from 2D to 3D will be a very noticeable difference. TV manufacturers have to try improve their products somehow from year to year to sell them, and most people are clueless about picture quality (not helped by the ridiculous figures claimed by the manufacturers), but sticking a gimmick like "supports 3D TV!!!!!" is an easy way to draw new customers in.

Even if it's less good than 2D, people are stupid, they'll buy what they're told to buy (see the LCD vs Plasma circa the Pioneer Kuro era) and with enough household penetration it wont matter how shit it is, it'll become accepted as a norm.

Before you ask why TV sales matter to 3D gaming: most gaming is console based on TV. With people buying 3D tv's for other reasons (film + broadcasting) when they get a console they're going to want to use the 3D functions for it as well. Developers and manufacturers will grab onto this and use it for sales as its something they can easily exploit in marketing and advertising.

I'd be much more excited about thin/flexible LCDs being large and cheap than I would about 3D. I want Eyefinity on three walls, that sort of thing.
