"But probably not for a few years they said. "

Huh? You guys don't watch the news much this week I take it.
Nintendo DS is already planning on selling 3D ds's that don't need glasses at the end of this fiscal year.
And hand helds are usually last on the list for "new" technology as far as gaming goes.
Although "this" time it will probably be the cheaper route.

As for the glasses comment, who the fucking hell gives a shit.
Your so worried about how retarded you look in glasses that hardly anyone but in your private residence will see you wearing that you'd pass up 3D?
Dude put the fuckin controllers down and go drink and get some ass, your living in the wrong fawkin world dude lol.

Seems somewhat missplaced to use the get a life card in a subforum aboot a mmo that isn't even out yet. About such a petty matter as 3d glasses to boot. But whatever.

I for one would rather have 3d without glasses not because I look 'less handsome' while wearing em but because sometimes it gives me headaches.

It's not completely seamless, but the areas between zones will be much larger. It's like you would still zone between La Theine and Valkurm (Norvallen -> Zulkheim), but you would not zone between Valkurm and the Highlands (Zulkheim-> Zulkheim) or into the Marshes from the Highlands.

Raises the interesting question about how you would zone after a bad pull.

IIRC, monsters have patrol areas. After a certain distance, they lose interest.

I don't think the main issue have with glasses is having to wear them, more the fact that *every* person in the room needs them, and at 80-100$ a pair basically fucks you over if you have any reasonable amount of friends (unless your loaded like fuck). Saying that unless your loaded as fuck your not going to be able to afford 3D tv any time soon, so the point is kinda moot

Bringing up the 3DS, I'm guessing its going to use the same technology as is used on FinePix REAL 3D W1 camera, which is basically a prism film over the screen to create the 3D effect. There was also a phillips TV at CES2010 that used the same technology on a larger television screen I believe, and allowed 3D images to be seen without glasses. The downside however is that you need to be directly in front of the screen at the right distance or you don't get the 3D image effect.

Of course for handheld gaming distances are normally quite close, and it nearly always going to be held directly in front of you, but I'll wait to try it before saying it'll be a success. If the distances and angle for 3D don't allow a fair degree of movement, I cant see it being too big a hit.

Yes, the technology they're going to use on 3DS is hardly applicable -at least in current state- to real TVs.

Even so, how dependent wiill the 3DS system be on you having near-normal vision? I can see bifocals having a bit of a problem with this.

Unless developers design games that require a 3 dimensional perspective, the 3D effect should not hinder someone that can't see in 3D properly (or 100% properly). Basically the way the system works is that it uses a special film that essentially emits a certain image for each eye depending on where your staring at the screen. You close one eye and it will be a 2D image and if done properly... shouldn'nt have any ghosting from the other eye image. This system is also backwards compatible with other DS games, i'm sure there will be a 2D mode if necessary.

Final Fantasy XIII was hardly small anyways. Sure the area that you got to walk your characters through was small for exploration but the areas themselves were freaking gigantic! In the Ice Lake level you could be at the end and up high in the air and see all the way back to the beginning of the area. Later on and in some cases you can still see the monsters from very far away too roaming around. I find it kind of odd they seemed to have made that a big point in the article. They obviously have not played the entirety of the game itself to make any sort of comparison like they did.

The article was very refreshing although bits and pieces were rehashed but with more additional specifics. I rate the article a 9 out of 10 regardless of some of the opinions they poked at that I found quite untrue and misguided. I absolutely cannot wait for this game to come out later this year. It gives me an excuse to build another custom computer :D And by the time I do I hope the new AMD chips are out. Probably won't buy the 'best' ATI card since it usually means overpaying by about 500.00 Probably go second gen or third gen before the new gen. Anyways, this game will rock.

    Interesting article.

For people who doubt "real" 3D gaming's future, I must suggest you try playing a few classic games with some LCD shutter glasses. I had a pair of Elsa revelator shutter glasses I got from ebay (for about $20 - work with any decent CRT) back in 2002. Games like Dungeon Siege (I suggest trying Dungeon Siege 2 though as the whole game works *perfectly* in 3D - including the menus) and return to castle wolfenstein were mind-blowing with the added depth (in fact any quake engine derived game works really well, including HL1 & expansions and HL2... I wish I could try Portal in stereo).

The only pity is Nvidia dropped driver support for several years (there was an outcry at the time ,but not big enough to matter) and to use stereoscopic 3D again you MUST have windows vista or 7 (despite XIV working on XP). I'll get Win7 someday...

Many devs are coming up with really nice HDR and real-time ambient-occlusion solutions (fear 2 has AO but only per-vertex I seem to remember). However I think the reference to HDR and gamma in the article is all about the creation and compositing of the publicity image of the man's face ( not about in-game rendering?). The breakdown is nice to see though as SE's CG movies/images are very sweet . Hundreds of layers sounds overkill but maybe that's the secret for the sweetness...

Losing my sight to migraine anomaly things in my vision so sorry if this is incoherent.

Also - if you do try Dungeon siege in shutter 3D, go to the snow town, fallraen or something on the multiplayer map... watch the snowflakes fall down into the cavern near the town from the bridge whilst listening to the ambience/ the music by Jeremy Soule. Anyone I've ever shown this to has had all doubts about the future of videogames / 3D vision melted away!

Also Also - Don't let anyone photo you wearing the glasses....

I like how the article mentions they are working closely with Nvidia engineers. Hopefully they really will make it work smoothly with some of Nvida's next gen hardware.

anyway show me what its like in FLO-ridah! :D

well i checked Miami on Speedtest.net and you guys got some fast internetz!, hahaha lowest being 10mb/sec and highest was 21mb/sec but still 10-20 either will be fine for anything you do really unless you plan on DLing 100% of the time, but for vid games i never have a problem ^^b
Yeah I guess I thought mine was faster than I thought, too, then.

I never get the same results, nor do I ever use that site but thought I gave it a chance since I saw it on your sig. Usually from 26-33mb download, 1.8-3.2mb down and 5-30 ping.

I never DON'T lag on FFXI. Whitegate with over 300 people in it lags like a mofo, and thanks to shitty server merger, I lag in just about every campaign battle.

"well i checked Miami on Speedtest.net and you guys got some fast internetz!, hahaha lowest being 10mb/sec and highest was 21mb/sec"

I don't pay for internet here. I just bought a 5200 and cracked it. Haven't paid for internet for that past 30ish months but yeah, I know my area offers 6mb/8mb/12mb/16mb so it's decent. Seen some 40-42mb connections here using my modem though. I can't get higher than 2.1-2.3mb/sec on torrents and seen some 5200s peak at like 3.4-3.8mb/sec np.
