Understanding still made more sense in the respect that he came to understand he hurt Knives. Self-respect didn't seem to be an issue at all, he was just a slacker that's all

I still think the movie was an over-all positive, but it was hard for me to swallow some of the ending.

Only half? Virtually everyone in my showing started boo-ing and/or shouting stupid shit and/or saying something about Avatar. Same thing happened during the trailer when I went to Expendables too.

Went to see this today, knowing from reading the comic myself and hearing from all my friends how great it was.... it was perfect. I wasn't sure if superbad kid would pull it off but he did well and i give him props for that. The only thing that made me go WTF is the fact that it was only my GF and me in the theater.... Given it was a thursday at 5pm but .... just us two... only people..... the one time i could try to get some movie head without any worry of being turned in and its during a movie i want to watch...

The movie bombed, this isn't that surprising.

About a minute into the trailer, I was "Fuck this, it's M whateverthefuckhisname is, the guy who screwed up Airbender".

    Sure enough, at the end...

That man has just gotten my "I won't watch your shit ever again" award as of hosing Avatar.

I'm hoping so too. The word of mouth should help here, I haven't heard word one of bad review stuff from the folks I've talked with that saw it. It deserves better than to fall off the charts.

Saw it a few nights ago.

Overall, I was pretty significantly disappointed. I knew nothing about the comics but was extremely excited about the movie given that I'm exactly the kind of audience it was designed to target. The trailer made the visual stylings look slick and the story itself sounded like a compelling epic.

Everything I looked forward to fell flat for me. Most (not all) of the visuals were poorly executed, too frequently recycled, and the humor was extremely hit-or-miss. Most significantly, the storytelling was just...really bad and didn't let the movie play to its strengths. Trying to compress (what I understand to be) a voluminous story arc into one two hour movie meant foregoing narrative coherence for the sake of hitting the major plot points, resulting in a movie that seemed less to me like a story than a series of peripherally connected vignettes. This never let me thoroughly ENJOY the parts that were really GOOD: Lucas' character was a huge highlight, but we only get a good minute or two of his fantastic humor before he's gone completely. Same thing with the lesbian ex, and same thing with the fights. In each and every fight we're treated to a few awesomely choreographed seconds of battle before the pacing of the movie forces the character off screen and the narrative forward. So instead of Scott's unique method of defeating the exes seeming like a triumphant strategical move, they felt like shoddy gimmicks that were inserted because a studio executive was tapping his watch just off-set. And it doesn't really make a lot of sense as a directorial decision. The beginning is unnecessarily slow, plodding, and boring and could have sacrificed twenty of its minutes for the sake of emphasizing and enabling the parts of SP that were tons of fun.

I need to watch it again on a better screen, and I'm sure I will, but I was pretty let down.

Lucas lee's character's personality is almost completely made up in the movie, he exists for about 3 seconds total in the comic and he's actually a decently nice guy. The entire scene in the comic is punch, whip into castle, conversation for 2 seconds then trick kaboom. In the movie the conceited / phoney crap is straight out of left field. The movie didn't really sacrifice anything except the katayanagi arc that wouldnt have made any sense in the context of the movie despite the fact that a midget robot would have been fucking awesome. All of the stuff that mattered in roxy's fight made it into the gideon fight, lucas's fight was extended by a large margin and the rest of the actual battles (if you dount count the race through honest ed's that didnt make it into the movie) were pretty much exactly on the money.

They only feel rushed because the fights arent exactly long in the comics in and of themselves. Most of the conflicts take place over the course of several weeks in the comics but actual climactic battles between scott and the exes take up like a page or 3 tops.

And I'm sad that I knew what your opinion would be before I even clicked the topic.

I think you're confusing me with someone else. I'm hardly a career critic.

And don't get me wrong. I've been looking forward to SP since I first saw a trailer. I really wanted to like it, there were a lot of things I really DID like about it, and I respect what it tried to do. I'm a huge supporter of ambitious projects that try new things and take adventurous leaps for the sake of vision.

I just don't think it did that very well. I think what you're doing is forcibly equating SP's quality as a movie with its faithfulness as an adaptation. Thrilling in seeing one of your favorite comics reproduced truly as a movie is great. I get why that's awesome. But I didn't go into SP with the luxury of having already been a fan. I didn't know that conflicts with the exes are developed "over the course of several weeks" and that that is why SP is good and compelling and fun. Because I didn't know that, what I got was a movie that felt disjointed and like a tease that kept dangling my admiration and excitement in front of my nose before snatching it away just to make me sad . What you've done by telling me that the movie does a wonderful job of duplicating the "page or 3 tops" that make up the fight sequences is make me think, as someone who has never read the comics, that either the director didn't have a STRONG interest in making SP as accessible as it needed to be to those who weren't familiar with the canon, or that it wasn't good source material for a movie.

I enjoyed the movie. I went into the theater with the mindset that the movie and the comic were two separate entities. Having read the comic repeatedly, I didn't want to over-analyze the movie and take the fun out of it, even though everyone I went with save one person had previously read the comic.

The inconsistency didn't really bother me, I just disliked the arbitrary decisions to take character traits and or lines from one person, and transfer them to another. I understand why they applied the knee weak-point thing to Roxy instead of Envy, but some of the lines were switched for what seemed like no real reason.

As a movie I loved it, as a comic adaptation it was pretty good. I can't really blame them though, the comic is very dialogue and story driven, fights only really make up a small percentage of the book. We couldn't risk another "Hulk" incident.

Also, I wanted to rage when they killed Crash and the Boys. They were my favorite band in the comic.

Envy ended up making a lot of appearances elsewhere. Roxy's weak point, the "let's both be girls" line, the "he's a creep, you're a bitch and you deserve eachother" line. I saw the point, seemed odd though.
