you dont have to worry about getting the plat trophy, as long as you've had it at one point (even if you've sold it) you still get the trophy

sweet, thanks for the info everyone!
one last question... does the TH trophy require i max out any of the items? or is just having them present in your inventory at any level good enough?
Just have them in your inventory at some point. The only time you need to max an item is when you have to use the item to upgrade it to the next tier (brain fart; not able to come up with the word for that process)
In fact if it is an item you don't need to upgrade and don't need to use you can just sell it (ie. Iron Bangle etc)
So, is it just me or are Gui just fucking stupid?
I won't even get into shenlong...
Like, I had come to the conclusion that you just have to kill them before the luck strikes, because you can't possibly survive when they finally do roar > ultima with no delay, but then I finally managed to get through by getting everyone to 100% and fully rebuffed before it stood up, then just sanding there in sen/sen/sen doing nothing until hit does them.
After which I'm like ok sweet I've totally got this.
Turtle itself is like 25%.
Left leg down.
Right leg staggered.
I switch to com to highwind the leg...
And Fang gets fucking 1 shot by a stomp from full hp with protectra up.
Seriously, fuck these things ><
edit:
Gawd and fuck, it's not even that. What I managed to survive was roar + stomp.
roar + ultima you flat out cannot survive, fresh tectra+shellra + triple sen still = destroyed
i'm assuming once you've finished the game already, there's no way to get back to the inner parts of orphan's cradle?
just realized i need 31 perovskites and it appears the only mob that drops them is in there D:
I am going to attempt to take out a Long Gui when I get home, but this is the plan I am going to try. It is taken from the PS3trophies forum thread, I will report back with my experience after I try it.
This is by far the easiest way to take down a Long Gui. This base of this strategy was given to me by Ninj4 and I tweaked it to make it quicker and more efficient.
Before Battle Preparations: The key to this strategy is preperation. You want to start with an Elixir in your inventory. There is only one Elixir in the game, if you still have it great, if not you can obtain an Elixir by fully upgrading a Doctor's Code to max level and then dismantling it. Next you should make sure your battle party is strong enough for this fight which will be around the time you receive the Master's Seal. Next is your weapons, the stronger the Commando weapons are, the better, I had a level 98 Omega Weapon for Lightning, a level 78 Kain's Lance for Fang and only a level 38 level 3 weapon for Hope. Ninj4's weapons were higher, but anywhere around this level should be fine. Next up make sure you have an Aegisol and Fortisol shroud. then set your Paradigms with these: Sab/Sab/Syn, Rav/Com/Rav and Com/Com/Com or Com/Com/Rav. Now you are ready for battle.
Battle Strategy: As you approach our Long Gui pal use your shrouds to gain enhancements and set your Sab/Sab/Syn as the active paradigm. Once the battle starts immediately call your Eidolon to avoid the Ultima spell and knock down the Long Gui. Now cast Poison, DeShell, Deprotect, Imperil, and Slow, if you have it, with your leader. Once you have hit him with these use your Eidolons special attack to quickly get rid of him. Once the party returns, if you haven't hit him with slow yet, let your other Saboteur cast slow on him, then immediately change to Rav/Com/Rav to drive up his chain gauge. Once it staggers continue this Paradigm until you hit 999% then immediately shift to Com/Com/Com or Com/Com/Rav and start to pound away on him. You should be able to get him halfway down on his health between attacks and Poison before he gets up. Now here's the key, as soon as he gets back to his feet use your Elixir to recharge your TP and quickly summon your Eidolon again to knock him back down and avoid his devastating attacks he will unleash when he gets up. Once he is down change your paradigm back to Sab/Sab/Syn and recast his status ailments. once he is properly afflicted follow the same steps above to finish him off. Done right and with a strong enough party, he should die by the end of the second stagger or right after it ends and never have a chance to even hit you or you even needing to heal anyone. If you follow these steps your shroud enhancements should also last the entire battle.
Yeah, there's a couple problems with that.
Main being, his goal is to kill 1 single long gui. He's suggesting tons of money (and an elixir lol) for the fight.
That's all well and good, if all you want is 1.
And, even then, it's still probably going to take multiple tries, because you just get face raped at will.
And, then, of course, when you start trying to farm them... it's just ridiculous. I get randomly gibbed in ways I see no possible prevention for that I haven't already tried... on probably 5-6 out of every 7 fights... then I finally get one, then get owned in the face repeatedly until I luck out on another.
I just don't get it, if I stack defensive shit it's going to take like 6-7 knockdowns and staggers to kill him, and eventually he's probably going to get a stomp in the middle of the roar+ultima and gib me anyway.
Also, I wouldn't use elixir for that. Save it for when you have a hard time 5* ing something.
Farm them? What are you farming from a Long Gui? If you want Dark Matter fight a Shaolong Gui (the babies), they are a lot simpler. I will dig up my strat for them if you want. Or is there something worth farming from the Long Guis? I don't know a reliable way to kill them for farming, that just seems sadistic to try when you can still farm traps etc from Adamantoise.
would definitely like to hear the shaolong strat.
as for the big guys, just tried that method out and it worked like a charm, went 1/1 using that and got my trophy. can't imagine any other reason to fight them, they have the same drop pool as the regular adamantoise if i'm not mistaken.
Same drop pool with slightly higher drop rate for the items I believe. Give me a min to find the strat I used. I will edit this post.
*EDIT* This is the strat I used.

Strategy
Open fight as SYN/MED/SAB. Snow will start spamming Slow/Daze/Curse on the Shaolong while Lightning keeps you healed and as Fang put up Haste/Protectra/Shellra/Bravera on everyone. Hopefully while buffing Daze lands which will make Snow stop casting and the Shaolong will just stare at you. Once you are fully buffed change to SAB/SAB/SAB and debuff the hell out of him. Mainly Deprotect/Deshell/Imperil/Slow (if not already aware, Imperil helps speed up the chain gauge). Once he is debuffed change to RAV/RAV/RAV and blitz him until staggered and chain guage is almost 999.9%. Once staggered change to COM/COm/COM and go all out. I was able to get him to around 50% in one stagger. Don't forget to Highwind as the stagger is ending for big damage. Then just switch to SAB/SAB/SAB and once Daze lands quickly change to SYN/MED/SAB to get haste/protectra back on everyone. In order to make sure I didn't wake it from Daze, after choosing my auto-attack on SAB I would pull up the Paradigm menu to make sure I could change the moment I saw Daze land. Once you are buffed/debuffed again just repeat the process.
Throughout the fight he would cast 1 maybe 2 Ultima's. When he does that change to SEN/SEN/SEN as soon as you see it start casting and then the moment the hit lands change to MED/MED/SEN for a couple quick Cura's then continue.
Even with this strat I had a few close calls. If he uses Bay early (or even at all) he can really fuck you up. Also, sometimes he uses Bay+Quake and other cheap shit. Most of the time when he did that I would just retry.
All in all my fights were 2:50-3:10 depending on my luck and I got my Dark Matter in about 10 kills. Basically I ran to the spot in the Northern Highplain where the babies are protected by the 2 large turtles. There are 3 Shaolong there. I would kill all 3, run out to a bit past the save point where the ground levels off and then turn around, run back and kill them again.
Long Gui have 5% base trap rate.
And I'm pretty sure there's a mistake in the guide. I think Adamantoise are 20% including the 5* on ingots, and Gui are 20% before, because every Gui I've killed has dropped ingot or trap.
And yeah I'm a nerd I'm going way past the trophies just to be able to mess around with different setups on the hard shit. Will probably have like 9 ultimate weapons and fully maxed acc's for everyone before I'm done lol.
I salute your dedication sir. I am just getting my Long Gui kill and moving on, I have had enough turtle farming for now. I have 40 hours on my first game and 81 on my current playthrough. Time to get my Plat and take a break. Maybe another time I will come back and max out all my Ultimate Weapons and shit.
*EDIT* This didn't deserve its own thread so I just wanted to say, FINALLY PLATINUM!
I'm really at a loss for what the point of these mobs is though, other than to make it "hard" to get the trophy.
Either they made it so the only thing in the game you can farm dark matter from is *supposed* to kill you way more often than not, no matter what, or I'm missing something crazy.
Cuz I've gone to the extent now of filling to 100%, getting fresh bravera/faithra/protectra/shellra, using full damage reduction gear on fang, standing in triple sen waiting for it, and getting 100-0'd faster than I could possibly react.
And it happens on both long gui and shenlong... more often in fact on shenlong.
I can't decide which is more frustrating, at least shenlong kill you fairly early most of the time, I've had more than 1 long kill me within a few seconds of getting the knockdown that would kill it.
its really frustrating. shaolongs are easy, it's just a matter of whether or not you get lucky enough that the game decides to let you win. i'm finding that i can easily take them down in one stagger phase, its just ~80% of the time it does some combination of ultima/bay/quake halfway thru the fight that completely destroys me before i can react.
the only point i can see here is padding, challenge certainly doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.
Yeah that's what's pissing me off, if it was like "ok you have to do this perfect or you're fucked" that's one thing, "even if you do it perfect you're still fucked more often than not" is just stupid.
I can understand having problems with the Long Guis, but the Shenlongs?
They're very easy, aslong as you switch to SEN/SEN/SEN at every special move. Using the strat Atreides posted.
Open with SEN/SEN/SEN to absorb Quake. Switch to SAB/SAB/SYN, and manually spam Slow, since the AI is too stupid to use it on their own. You might have to heal once if the debuffs are slow to land. After Deprot/Deshell/Slow/Imperil are up, manually spam Daze. Right as it lands, cancel the rest of your casts. It lasts quite a while.
SYN/SYN/SYN and buff whatever's missing, Enfire rapes these things. SAB/RAV/RAV and keep spamming Daze while your RAVs stagger it, it'll stop an attack or two.
Drive the chain gauge as high you like, and then switch to COM/COM/RAV. It likes to use Bay/Ultima at around 50% HP, just be ready for it, Bay can really fuck you up.
With ~3100 STR on Fang I was hitting them for ~400k, they go down in just a few rounds of attacks.
The only base items I am missing are Spark Ring and Fire Charm
I can get the ring from dismantling a sparkbane brooch?
and also I don't know how to get the fire charm.
anyone know where I can get these 2?
fire charm you can get from a chest in steppes, and the ring you can get from a chest in the forgotten commons area of lake bresha
