The only "real" way to show skill in ffxi is through instanced stuff really, or at least stuff where you don't have to worry about messing up, dying, wiping, and some other group taking claim off you. No one's gonna risk anything new on a pop HNM without having either loads of back-up or absolutely zero competition there, but on a mission fight or other BCNM, it's much "safer" to fool around and try new things. Hell, the Kings system could be argued to promote a very narrow way of playing, "this strat works, we can't afford to try something new, wipe, and give our competition a free mob with low HP, so we'll just stick to what we already know". And that's never a good thing.

I never saw the pros in world-spawns in this game or any other. It boils down to a really shitty form of PvP.

I just get sick of people bringing morality to a video game where we deal with 15 year olds who have no concept of who they are or how to act in polite society. Well, they can always make all world spawn gear obsolete by introducing better gear from instanced content, and they have a prime opportunity to do that now.

If anything it will send a message to future generations of MMO developers that the world spawn system is how you DONT do your games.

The only crap(from kings) left atm that you cant get better or the same item elsewhere is D ring, pixie earring, and a ridill if you want to dual-wield it with the magians axe.
Gaiters from tiamat, v belt, and SW drops are all that's left from HNMs that cant be replaced easily and v belt is going to be gimp compared to Sash post june assuming each server has a few competent linkshells. Most HNM are already obsolete. We just have idiots who want to buy crap gear when better shit is out there. Given the lines and time spent hunting those NMs it's probably less "work" just farming the gil to buy the good items from bazaars.

Oh and if i wanted to cheat at a game to feel like i accomplished something i'd find a game genie and play battletoads.
Even with the rmting gil for cash angle i could technically just buy the gil for a relic by saving cash from even a shitty job and skip all the bullshit about camping 4+ year old mobs to go do something fun instead.

it always made me wonder why BG was being accused of botting over and over again. We claimed maybe 1-2 kings a week, IF that, and it was always we were botty mcbot faces. Our best claim rates were always right after patches when the bots were waiting for their new memory lock or patch updates. I remember the week that app was supposedly broken and we claimed 5 of 7, it was like fucking christmas. Then bot was fixed and we were losing claim again.

Of course, even shells that insisted on no members botting had people doing it anyway, those people who were doing it in BG got punished severely, most ended up quitting either after their punishment was over or later because of whatever. But botting wouldnt even exist if instanced content were the norm instead of the option and its why XI only has X number of compared to wows Y. If other MMOs had open world spawn NMs, there would be bots there too.

I used to wonder how people could live with themselves as they blatantly cheated (and dont try to use different words or feelings around it, you were technically cheating) but then again, every single one of us were technically "cheating" because we insisted on the ability to own our computers and not be forced to a screen we couldnt tab out of. I slept fitfully for my XI career, mostly because I was constantly worried about the LS, the forums, taking care of the people I cared for. My conscious wouldnt let me bot, it might let other people feel good but I still would have felt like shit.

I know that almost all of you slept like babies with your bot running, which is fine, it doesnt bother me. I kept my standards, you kept yours, we were hated, I was disrespected, the world continues turning. What does this wall o text prove? Nothing, the only "app" I used at kings was a little program ragn made called KingCount. I plugged in the pop time and pressed the button and it gave me the times when I should call to clear darters and do my @30, @20, @10. Call me dirty for using it, I know Septimus would, but thats how I roll dog.

This certainly demonstrates that you have never used a bot and truly have no idea how they function and why people should use them. Bots are not simply "plug it in and go!" They require just as much effort put into organization as claiming without bots in order to be successful.

The HNM claiming system is pretty retarded all around. As Aikar pointed out, lag is a huge factor in determining whether or not you have a chance at claiming. If your computer lags badly enough, the mob will be claimed before it even appears on your screen, so already there is some bias in the system based on how fast your PC is. I don't really have a lot of time right now, so this is going to be somewhat cursory. When it comes down to it, there isn't much of a difference between a highly organized group of people with good computers who don't bot and a highly organized group of people with mediocre computers who do. Can't really blame people for making a small investment into FFXI-App instead of buying a good computer (or jacking over their video settings) just so that they can compete with others who already have good computers.

Anyways... that post doesn't really do my thoughts justice, but I do have class in 3 minutes so...

Yeah, we can. Every post that you make in regards to botting is an effort to save face, because you botted and RMT'd your ass off. If you don't think that people have realized this by now, I just wanted to let you know that yes, we realize that justifications can be made by those with a willingness to do so, and yes, it has it's benefits for people willing to go that route. Arguably SE has even learned this lesson, though they haven't been perfect in dealing with the issue, at least there hasn't be another Faf, KB, Turtle style situation.
