I always loved the sound of Russian but unless you can get a deal like mentioned above or have a sure job lined up for when you graduate it's practicality is pretty limited. They didn't offer it at my HS or I'd I have probably taken it there and then continued on in college; instead I'm an uncultured one language dude.

French i have found most use in honestly (i don't speak Spanish). Great to use to pick up chicks at a bar. Great to use in Europe (if you ever travel) because if they don't speak English, french is a close second. if they speak neither you probably don't want to be in that part of Europe.

french is also very easy to pick up and make some casual conversations with.

Spanish, then maybe French or German.

Japanese is only used in Japan. So unless you plan to live, work, or otherwise spend a significant amount of time in Japan, it's not worth learning it.

I'm mostly between Arabic, Chinese and then one of the romance languages (probably french). I'm not sure which language would end up being most useful later in life though. I'm an engineer so being fluent in both arabic and english would be a big help, but I can also see chinese being just as useful.

Any thoughts or opinions on what language would be useful or maybe which one might end up being easier? I've only done latin before in HS/college so picking up a romance language wouldn't be so bad, although I'm a bit concerned about learning a character-based language rather than an alphabet based one. Will a character based language be much harder to learn or is it just a different type of learning?

Also if anyone has any good ideas on ways to practice what I've learned that'd be good information too!
Late to the party, but learn whatever language you have the most ready access to the largest number of native speakers possible.

Anything else is a waste of time.

Spanish for U.S. practicality, French for Canadian practicality, German for yelling at people (only needs a couple of phrases to be effective).

Programming languages for more practicality and fun than any verbal language.

unfortunately i have access to about no native speakers of just about any language here in ohio, i realize that's going to be a relatively large hurdle in this whole thing but i'm hoping that i can still pull it off

If access to native speakers is the main issue, then i can't see much use for learning anything besides spanish in the US. Perhaps living in Europe might help.
