Tanky DPS sounds like your flavor, but considering you like range that's going to be hard to find. Try out Jarvan IV and Irelia. Both can be very durable (Jarvan has natural armor while Irelia has great self-heals) but they also are great gap closers, giving you the ability to charge in from a range.
The problem with full tank mode is you're only useful if the team bothers killing you. If you cant do damage or CC enough to disrupt the enemy team what are you doing a team fight. That is the whole reason Shen for the most part is useless these days.
Seems like the enemy team would opt not to bother to kill you if there were squishier targets around just to make you useless.
Thanks for all the champions advice too, I've accepted that I'm not going to find a ranged character that can handle any kind of damage, and I hate running away(kiting), so I've been looking for tanky dps, thanks for the suggestions.

Browse about with the filters. Bruisers tend to be tanky dps. Ranged character that could take punishment would be a bit OP.
I often play games with my 11 y/o nephew. He does pretty good all things considered, but he usually just takes recommended items (and doesn't really get into all of the different types of stats).
We got into game yesterday and my nephew was playing as Garen. Someone else on the team was trying to figure out what type of character to play so he kept asking "Garen, tank or AD?" in which my nephew replied "I don't know." I'm sure he had no idea what AD was (and I'm sure I wouldn't be able to explain it in 20 seconds of character selection). It just cracked me up because I'm sure the other guy was rage facing behind his screen. It all worked out and we won though.
Why is AD so hard to explain? Just say attack items versus tank items.
Yeesh, an 11-year-old having to deal with this game's community must be harsh.
We need to setup a 5v5 ranked team D; me and one of my rl friends play duo que ranked games all the time and keep getting put with scrubs. Fucking lost 6 games in a row no matter how well I do -_-;
I'm just now getting into this game too. Is there any way to get more than 90~ IP per match? Even ones where I get 10+kills and no deaths don't net me much (unless 90-110 IS a lot)
not without buying an IP boost
From our game the other day with Dantragk and Health Nut. Suppression and Leona work too well together haha triple stun essentially.
Edit: Yea thats a custom Kayle skin I use =x
Was testing fraps
First win of the day can get like 200 IP that resets every 22 hours I believe. But other than that its about time + win/loss. A.I matches give less IP too.
I guess thats why i rarely see other characters in my matches. All the noobies cant afford to buy champs lol. I'll buy a 3150 today, just another 5 matches should get me it.
Pretty much. When I started the game I knew I was gonna be playing for a while so I bought one of the $20 champion packs. I don't know how people play without something like that because if you end up buying a bunch of champions you won't have IP to buy runes when you hit level 20.
Having a starter pack of a bunch of champions that were always available was very helpful.
Played my first ranked match last night, nobody was on so I queued up solo... Long story short the Garen on our team was level 4 with a dorans shield and 9 deaths no kills 20min into the game and continued to tower dive a while longer until he went AFK in the jungle. He was found there later in the game to continue feeding one more time...
Oddly we almost won considering the enemy team had a fed chogath that was bigger then the map. I had some pretty awesome battles vs MF and Temoo while I soloed bot lane :D
I second the vote for team BG ranked matches. Dibs on Leona >_>;
I'd like to do some ranked play, as long as I can support.
I played Sona against a Leona who simply shut me down every team fight. Was dreadful.
And I played on a team with a Leona who sucked balls and got completely clobbered.
I only ever get the bad players playing new champions!
