Yeah, that would be the exception on some bruisers like shen and shyv

Bros like renekton, lee sin, wukong, olaf, jarv, riven, udyr, trundle, irelia, trynd, etc will always pick maw over wits. I think so, anyway. All of the dyrus/wickd/voyboy streams I've glanced at(I only ever watch the first 10-15 minutes of a game since it's boring after that lol) have them buying hexdrinker VERY fast. Sometimes maw is their first pickup

Half of those champions are terrible with wits end in the 1st place, and the other half favor wits end by a large margin.

Anyone that can utilise the Aspd = wits, everyone else = maw.

Wits: Shen, Shyv, Udyr, Trynd(?)
Maw: everyone else.

How are people building olaf? He's always been a fav champ of mine, and I've always built him tankier with warmogs/tri/mercs etc etc.

Possible to build him more DPS and still have some decent survivability?

Doran blade stacking, CDR boots are awesome on him. Fratmogs is never a bad option.

Last night I laned top as Cho'Gath against a Nasus who got every. single. last hit. He was seriously >200 CS by 20 minutes. I'm still learning roles and champions (mostly play support, with some Sion thrown in when I'm bored and a really shitty jungle amumu), how in the hell do I counter this?

I don't think you can except for letting him push toward your tower (making him think twice about turret range) and support from your jungler. Perhaps even bouncing him when your creep is low.enough for him to last hit?

He was amazing at freezing the lane to keep it on his side, I couldn't once get it to move forward. Jungler never came to gank (he's an acquaintance who was on skype with me, drunk, and whining the whole time -- I'm not playing with the guy again, as he has a similar attitude while sober too). I'm still getting more familiar Cho'Gath and am at the point where I can actually play PVP with him and do well, but laning against a guy who was clearly a pro player and losing the whole game because I couldn't control top was so disheartening.

My friends all have ~3-500 wins, I'm at 133 currently (and slightly above .500 overall) so I'm rather far behind in my progression in this game compared to them.

As Cho Gath you cant really push Nasus out of lane; what I would have done was pushed the lane hard into his tower forcing him to be unable to Q every single minion. As Cho you can do that, and assuming your ult is up, run to their golems or wolves and be back by the time the next wave is there.

You can't really do much as Cho'gath solo top if your jungler is not coming in to gank in that case. A few other champs would have been in the same situation. What was the rest of the team makeup? Was switching over to bottom with someone not an option?

Pay attention to your minions HP and silence or knock him up as he approaches is all I can guess.

I guess the best thing I can do is to keep practicing. I don't think I'm a bad player, just inexperienced and vastly so compared to that guy.

Are your friends not willing to make smurfs to play with you? It might do you some good to play people more on your level.

As for that match-up, I agree with Aero. Shove your lane, see if you can steal something from their jungle, try to disrupt his farm with rupture. Maybe even roam down to mid and see if you can pick up a kill/assist. Just remember to keep yourself warded if you're going to play this way.
