Support is more about warding properly and buffing your team/debuffing the enemy than doing any damage yourself. The best supports are ones with crowd control abilities that incapacitate the enemy enough so that someone else can pick up the kill. Mandatory support items are:
Philosopher's Stone (Upgrade this to Shurelia's Reverie in mid/late game)
Heart of Gold
Mercury's Treads (cooldown boots optional, but I usually get other items instead for CDR)
-some people also like getting Kage's Lucky Pick for a more offense. Popular on characters like Janna, Soraka, or Zilean)
Aura items are really important for support characters. Popular items are:
Aegis of the Legion (I build this in almost every game)
Zeke's Herald
Will of the Ancients
Frozen Heart (works better if you are a tanky support like Taric, Alistar, or Leona)
Abyssal Scepter (same, but usually better on an AP mid like Karthus)
For aura items, make sure another teammate isn't building them first. Frozen hearts are especially popular on some top characters and junglers. And always always ALWAYS get wards on support. I can't stress this enough. If the enemy is warding a lot, use more vision wards to destroy theirs, and consider picking up an Oracle's Elixir too.
Cooldown reduction is important, and fortunately a lot of the items I listed above have CDR on them. A combination of masteries, and then a Shurelia's Reverie & Frozen Heart will put you at or very close to the CDR cap. Play with the builds and adapt to the enemy team. If they have a lot of Attack Damage, don't prioritize an MR item! Support also needs to have a lot of map awareness to see the other team's warding habits, the jungler's location, and taking objectives. I usually end up being the one to focus my team as a support character. I wouldn't say I'm great at what I do, but it's my main role and I can play pretty much any support character proficiently.
