I'm in the NFL thread a lot, but... it's a substantially more well-established entity than LoL is, or even online game spectating in general. I get fandom, I just wouldn't have expected some of the World Cup levels of intensity I've seen. It's definitely not something I expected to find when a buddy just casually invited me to play.

Any distinction you are drawing are your own. It's definitely not as widely watched as the NFL, but I don't understand why you would think people would be any less passionate about it. Remember, this is a forum that was originally dedicated to FFXI if you need an example.

It seems an odder thing to be a passionate fan of? If I want to play football, I need to get 9 more guys, or ideally 21 other folks, to get together. It's weather dependent for some folks, too, and an area to play in. So I get spectating it: it's not on often, it's a bigger hassle to play. But for a computer game? I may not be the best in the world, or anywhere near it, but watching someone else play, when I can easily just log on and play... seems different. I can understand a passion for the game, for wanting to get as good as you can get, and to that extent I understand watching people who are better, as a learning mechanism, but as a fandom? For players, and not for the game? That just doesn't make as much intuitive sense to me.

I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying I didn't expect it. I mean, I was obsessed with FFXI for an embarrassingly long amount of time, but I never thought of it as something to be a fan of other players for. The reasons that I enjoy spectator sports are usually a matter of lack of playability or access to the real thing; I would rather do than watch, and I guess it just wasn't something I'd really considered that some people like watching, too, even if they can do it personally. It's not an argument; I'm not trying to persuade people to NOT be fans... I am simply explaining why I was personally surprised by the enthusiasm people bring to the fandom for other peoples' play.

people can generally play any sport they want, but they watch professionals play the sport because they enjoy seeing extremely skilled people playing a game they enjoy, and they also enjoy seeing spectacular plays made by said professionals. goes for video games too.

It's almost like neither of you read anything I posted. Thats like the 4th response that has nothing to do with what we were talking about.

Link is the big star on CLG now anyways, imo.

As I said before, any distinctions you are trying to draw are your own, and don't really mean anything. People are fans of a lot of things.

hotshot isn't a good player anymore. he's constantly out cs'd, always loses lane and just takes advantage of heros that people can suck on and still be a nuisance in 5s (chogath, shen etc). chauster and aphro are fantastic imo. curse probably the best NA team right now followed by clg which is sickening because they both can't hold a candle to eu or korean teams.

anyone that disagrees with this hasn't watched any of the other regions games.

I disagree with CLG being the second best NA team. MRN > CLG

Watching the NA scene feels like watching amateur LoL. Until NA stops filling up all the last place spots at majors I'm far more excited by the EU and Asian scenes.

I disagree with a lot of that and I watch games from every region. I don't think the NA teams are as far behind Korea and EU as you think. In a fairly recent IEM Curse had a very close game with Azubu and beat Gambit who went on to 2-0 2-0 both azubu blaze and frost (both probably top 3 teams in Korea along side Najin Sword) and that was with a sub replacing their most consistent/best player (imo). Also you have to realize that neither Korea nor EU are the best statistically. Korea has an awful record against China competitively.

One NA team doesn't count. Curse is pretty fucking amazing right now, especially with voyboy. Curse practices religiously because if they did not qualify for Season3, the team would have disbanded. They put everything they had into the qualifying matches and have snowballed from then.
