Pros banned from streaming competing titleshttp://www.vg247.com/2013/12/04/leag...peting-titles/League of Legends players who sign on to professionally in Season Four are contractually obliged not to livestream gameplay sessions of competing products.
The contract precludes livestreaming of Awesomenauts, Bloodlines Champions, Crasher, Dawngate, Demigod, Dota 2, Fat Princess, Guardians of Middle-Earth, Hearthstone, Heroes of Newerth, Infinite Crisis, Land of Chaos Online, Monday Night Combat, Realm of the Titans, Rise of Immortals, Sins of a Dark Age, SMITE, Solstice Arena, StarCraft 2, Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes, Warlocks, World of WarCraft, World of Tanks and World of Warplanes.
Gambling and betting websites, drugs, guns, pornography and tobacco product are also strict no-nos.
The news comes via OnGamers, which published a segment of the League of Legends Season Four contract, but was later confirmed by Riot Games’ Whalen Rozelle on Reddit.
“We say this all the time: we want League of Legends to be a legitimate sport. There are some cool things that come from that (salaried professional athletes, legitimate revenue streams, visas, Staples Center), but there’s also a lot of structural work that needs to be done to ensure a true professional setting,” Rozelle said.
“We recognize there may be some differences of opinion in the perception of pro players’ streams. In the past, pro gamers only had to worry about their personal brands when streaming and, at most, may have had to worry about not using the wrong brand of keyboard to keep their sponsor happy. Now, however, these guys are professionals contracted to a professional sports league. When they’re streaming to 50,000 fans, they’re also representing the sport itself.
“I can’t stress enough how these guys in the LCS are on the road to being real, legitimate athletes. This is new territory for a lot of teams (especially in esports), because the transition goes from being a group of talented individuals to being real icons of a sport and a league. Similarly, you probably wouldn’t see an NFL player promoting Arena Football or a Nike-sponsored player wearing Reebok on camera. Pro players are free to play whatever games they want – we’re simply asking them to keep in mind that, on-stream, they’re the face of competitive League of Legends.”

i wish they would fucking stop calling these players legitimate athletes, jesus christ
by the definition of "athlete" it's close, tbh.
sounds like it's time for evolution to introduce us a new term.
Ethelete? not in a deragatory way, but in a legit sorta.... way... /shrug

Call them what they are. Professional Video Game Players. Why fucking bother with athlete?
Also, that contract is old and apparently inaccurate to the current situation. In reality, who cares? Riot is looking out for Riot. They are a company, not a goddamn eSports player union. They want to make money. That's the WHOLE idea. They are currently making a shitload of it and will look for any way to make more.
Why do you care so hard?
Also, I don't get the reddit explosion over this. They are working directly for a company that is paying them tons of money to play their game. I do think it is a bit draconian especially considering queue times on streams for exceptionally high level players, but a bunch of teens losing their shit because they don't understand contracts is kind of funny.
because it's an insult to actual professional athletes?
I'm sure people considered gymnasts non-athletes back in the day as well. I'm sure people still think curling shouldn't be an Olympic sport. I'm fine with this progress. Solo or a team of individuals training extremely hard to be the best at something that the average person would get slaughtered at. That's enough of a definition of an athlete for me.
I disagree but I really don't want to go nuts with the argument.
They get paid a shitload of money for what they do. Good for them. Pretty standard business practices here.
Also, the kids on Reddit are hilariously naive but that's expected.
I'm not sure where the insult comes on. Train hard + proficiency at something + competition = athlete.
Unless people are trying to break Athlete down into the realm of physical exertion only, which again, goes back to the "are curling athletes actual athletes"? Is that foppery-infused riding a prissy horse around in a sand pit "athletic"?
It's a blurred line; shooting and archery are both sports but hardly require more than hand/eye coordination (still target shooting). Poker has the same association problem as competitive video gaming, but is far more popular in a mainstream way. Kick the Can and Freeze Tag could also be defined, as a sport, but that's not the way people refer to them.
The weeds be high on this one.
I may be wrong here but does it seem like the number of "viable" champs has skyrocketed in season 4? I tend to think this is because most champs were already viable and people tend to bandwagon, but with more ease in following non-NA streams (lots of reporting on Korea and Chinese meta) more people are picking more champs.
Hell, Shyvana is pretty strong right now and wasn't picked at all in OGN in the first season 4 matches.
I'm trying Shyvana jungle aka farmfarmfarmfarmfarmfarm gank once farmfarmfarmfarm
