Are Jews a Race?

In the 1980s, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Jews are a race, at least for purposes of certain anti-discrimination laws. Their reasoning: at the time these laws were passed, people routinely spoke of the "Jewish race" or the "Italian race" as well as the "Negro race," so that is what the legislators intended to protect.

But many Jews were deeply offended by that decision, offended by any hint that Jews could be considered a race. The idea of Jews as a race brings to mind nightmarish visions of Nazi Germany, where Jews were declared to be not just a race, but an inferior race that had to be rounded up into ghettos and exterminated like vermin.

But setting aside the emotional issues, Jews are clearly not a race.

Race is a genetic distinction, and refers to people with shared ancestry and shared genetic traits. You can't change your race; it's in your DNA. I could never become black or Asian no matter how much I might want to.

Common ancestry is not required to be a Jew. Many Jews worldwide share common ancestry, as shown by genetic research; however, you can be a Jew without sharing this common ancestry, for example, by converting. Thus, although I could never become black or Asian, blacks and Asians have become Jews (Sammy Davis Jr. and Connie Chung).

what's interesting in this case is the Jews didn't want to be considered a race at all, but were put there for certain discrimination laws.

The concept of race came about as a justifying ideology for western european imperialism. Meaning, the white race, the superior race, would conquer all other races and bring to them christianity, technology, and science. The irish were colonized and oppresed by the english, so they were of lower class, and therefore not white. The jews were not christian and they had no powerful nation-state that conquered other nations to exploit them, so they were not considered white, ie: a superior race.

Ya when I started looking I was like "oh ya shit". So definitely could be a case to classifying hispanic as a race (as I said I was on the fence on it). Only thing I have been trying to find is what the US census in today's time uses to classify something as a race vs. an ethnicity. And mostly I've found that the Census Bureau admits that people get confused by the two categories, but no where do they say why they do what they do, and it seems they continually want to classify hispanic as an ethnicity instead of a race.

It does seem to suggest however that because there is 0 physical to hispanic is what is holding it back even if culturally they could be the same.

Who knows though I did find that putting race as a category is something the bureau is reviewing for the update in 2012. TBH it shouldn't even be there at all, because they even admit that most people choose different ones throughout their life, and because of so many interracial marriages it's become harder and harder to really classify someone in the US by one race.

Added to taking statistics on race just helps continue the idea that races are "different" even though they aren't.

Reason I talked about hispanic is that since it is cultural content then it would have a chance, since it isn't only physically based.

It would seem from what I read that ethnicity is strictly a cultural-based similarity. Whereas race includes both the physical and the cultural. So ethnicity is almost a sub-category of race.

I would want to ignore the past ideals of race, because it was mostly used for power, and a sense of superiority. Now it's more like trying to make sure minorities get the benefits they need, and while I can't say whites don't have it easier, we aren't just classify people as non-white so we can be better. So I would say that more recently we should be looking at the physical for "race" and the "cultural" for ethnicity.
