Returning this late in the game.

So i'm attempting to come back and play the game from Scratch, I'm aware that the game may die when FFIV comes out in Late 10' or early 11'. Its been years since I've started from scratch, no money, etc. So I had a few questions, whats the best server to start on, best job to take to 75, or 99, whatever. Best way to make money?

You're about to get the "use search" and "obligatory link to random question thread" responses, but I'll give you the gist of your question

1) Shit is situational.

2) Take the job you have fun with, if you're not having fun then why come back? (But some things never change. WHM will always get invites to events, BRDs will always get merit invites and SAMs are the king DD. etc)

3) Want to make money? Craft. Anyone who says there's no money in crafting are lying or stupid. If you're not into crafting, trying fishing. Otherwise, have fun farming for hours and hours.

4) Game isn't going to die, SE is already prepping it to be very solo/lowman friendly and a lot of people still have plenty of goals left to complete in FFXI, so don't worry. As long as you like playing it, so will at least a few others.

There is no best server to come back on. Do you have any friends on a server? if you do, go there.

My brutal advice would be to not return, there been many threads like this you can probably search and look for some answers.
Getting in touch with your old game buddies would be the best if you wanna get back to playing. Easier to advance faster these days I guess and old buddies helps.

FFIV has been out for years buddy. If you really enjoy FFXI, I would say now is the best time to come back due to the surplus of players from server merge. There are a lot of people out there willing to help and if you really enjoy FFXI it will be a fun experience.

Just start playing and see if you have fun. If you don't, you can always quit. FFXI is just a game you play for a while, not a permanent lifestyle choice. (obligatory response: YES IT IS, LOL)

Prior to Vana'Fest, it would have been more difficult to disagree with you. But the sheer number of "coming back" threads, the excitement about upcoming content and the radical refocusing of the leveling experience means that people are going to have a much easier time in the near future.

I am on a non-merged server and the peak number of players has increased by about 1000 since the update.

Go to the server where you know someone that can help you starting off. Merged servers now have higher populations that unmerged servers, so that doesn't really matter. Though, there might be some short term drama related to top LS's clashing because of the merge, but that shouldn't really effect you at all.

Knowing someone for help really is the best advice...

Or if you can, get a friend's old 75 mage account to use to PL yourself up (as long as you already know the game mechanics). Can be awfully helpful for redoing old content.

Cerberus (merged server) rarely drops under 2000 now, and peaks around 4500.

For the money thing, about 6 months ago some friends and I started from scratch for fun.

At first it sucked BUT I did fine that doing moat carps in sandy was probably the most effective money maker for someone with no one to help moneywise and no access to the jeuno/whitegate AHs. (moat carps still sell decently well in sandy).

The AH thing was the biggest issue where things for the most part don't sell there (outside of crystals).

Also learn to ignore the "omg n00b" comments when you show up in the dunes without earrings or some shit.

Lately, just don't bother with sea. Haven't yet, haven't needed to, and it's a lot less stressful that way. XD

I'd wait another 3-6 months (or whenever they actually finish raising the level cap and doing job adjustments) to come back, but that's just me.

I don't know any PC users who can stand not using them, to be honest. I go without Windower even for a few minutes for the ASA stuff and it's like I'm playing a vastly inferior game.
