Fucked? lol
Fucked? lol
Depends where you live. In NYC after the third they issue a bench warrant for your arrest I believe.
Stop being an idiot and go.
No speakie english! lol
Just act like an asshole and you won't get picked.
seriously, jury duty was pretty tight. I went for a day, read trashy magazines and watched awful day time tv with random strangers. I also got a little money for doing so and an extra day to turn in a paper I had due that day. Worked out quite well.
Jury duty would be awesome, all I do right now is sit at home and watch Law & Order anyways, it'd be like the same thing but for menial pay.
Go and be an idiot.*
"I'll be an excellent juror, all I need to see is what color the guy is: black? he's guilty! white? he's not... it's just like a pregnancy test, except you don't gotta pee on me to get results."
Depends on the Judge, I've seen Judge's here send 20+ people to jail for the night for not showing up for Jury duty. He was making an example because people were always skipping.
That might not fly. In Florida, jury duty is "one trial, or one day of service."
In large jury pools, your one day is basically sitting around waiting to get picked.
BUT! They can make you answer the phones, or if you act like an asshole, they can make you pick weeds, clean floors, or anything within reason that the judge may want you to do.
...or you can simply state that you believe in jury nullification, and are more than willing to exercise this right.
I had grand jury duty. It was awful being stuck in a room with a handful of people who shouldn't be allowed to decide anybody's fate for six months.
None of that shit works in NYC. They don't play games and actually have investigators as part of the court who interview you if you claim to not be able to, or are against the mechanics of jury duty. I was there for three days and they paid me 75 dollars a day to sit around for a few hours watching cnn and texting on my phone. Everyone has to do and everyone should go at least once.
Seriously, jury duty is only for people who are to stupid to get out of it.
For as serious as courts make jury duty sound, you would think they would send the jury duty notices via USPS w/ Delivery Receipt or something.
I've never gone to jury duty, and just throw the first couple notices in the garbage. Then they will send you a "final call" notice or some shit. I just call them at that point and say I haven't received any of the previous notices, and say I'm at school or something (I'm not.... just make up an excuse).
Then they send me the regular letter again maybe a year later, and I just do the cycle over again.
It's easier to just go and do it, but I would have to drive over an hour each way to get to my counties courthouse. Fuck that shit, on top of having to miss work.
Also:
If you do end up at the courthouse and are among the group of people who the lawyers are trying to pick..
They will ask anyone who has any previous relationship to the parties in question, or the lawyers themselves, to raise their hands and they will go over each person. If you have any relationship at all (wink wink) they will not pick you b/c of conflict of interest. Just say you are friends with the plaintiff/defendant, or you used one of the standing lawyers for a consultation.
There's really a million different ways to get out of it. NYC seems pretty strict, but that seems very isolated honestly. I've lived in 3 different counties in NY, all within an hour driving of NYC (Ulster, Rockland, and Orange). I've used the letter trick I posted previously every damn time and have had no problems. My dad used the trick I mentioned in this post last year when he got called for jury duty in Orange County.
Somewhat hijacking this thread but...
I got my first jury summons a little over a week ago to appear in mid April at 8 am. Some questions come to mind:
Apprently the court I am going to is considered the Superior Court of the area (county I guess not really sure) so would this mean it is likely not just some petty crime and could last for several days maybe weeks? And on average how many hours each day you go normally? Was just a bit concerned with some classes, in particular the one on the first day with my 2:30 pm class.
Edit: I am not full-time just part time student this semester
They legally can't make you go if you are a student. If you're a student all year around then you don't have to worry about it. If you are not a full time student and have breaks, they will require you to pick a date in which you can go, if you miss it, they issue a bench warrant.
Re: classes read my above post. If you have classes they can't force you to miss it. You must however reschedule with them or they will come after you.
I was supposed to have jury duty last week. My therapist and the office of accessibility at my school wrote letters saying that if I serve on a jury, I'll need a personal note taker, a tape recorder, and someone to help me interpret meanings, plus about a week extension on any decision I have to make if they want any chance of me being a reliable juror (pretty much the same accomodations my school has to give me).
The city sent me a letter basically saying "screw that, you're exempt".
Edit:
I don't know if it varies from location to location, but here they can make full time students serve on a jury. You can file an exemption if your date to appear happens to coincide with an important date at school, and your professor isn't willing to let you make up or miss the assignment/test/project/whatever.
An older friend of mine said he's thrown out somewhere around 15 notifications in his life, he's never served once, no ramifications. In Los Angeles.
I have to report starting Monday, it's really fucking up some crunch time at work if I actually have to go in...
I'm beginning to wonder if NYC is the only state/city that actually enforces their laws on skipping out of jury duty lol.
I've served on a jury, was actually kind of fun. I guess having a county job that pays you while your out on jury duty makes it sting less though
With california though, you call the night before and they will tell you if your group is needed or if to call back in the morning. If you call in the morning they will then tell you to either call after lunch or if your in. if you call at lunch and still not needed, your done. So if your lucky in california, you can get away with tossing the notices, but I really wouldn't want to chance that and have an arrest record over it.
