I remember my supervisor tried to skip out on jury duty and the cops came to our work, took his ass out to the squad car, and drove him there themselves.

In PA they send you a letter with a juror number on it, and a phone number you have to call the night before to see if you get a summons. All 4 times I've gotten a letter I didn't have to come in, and my wife had to go in once. All she did was sit in a room for a couple hours and play DS, then got excused.

I just served on a child molestation case back in January, only part I regret is finding out after it was declared a mistrial that he had a history of child molestation (vote was 8 guilty, 4 not guilty and nobody would change). It actually wasn't that bad but then again I was getting paid by my work instead of the $15 a day I would get from the jury duty itself.

Varies from state to state and county to county. As a student in (my county here (it's embarrassing if you know Texas)) I was exempted simply because I'm in college. If I'd bothered to update my license to show I'm in Smith county, I wouldn't have been so lucky.

That doesn't make sense. States can't just ignore Federal law so you saying it like that isn't correct. If you can file for an exemption then they can't ignore it, which is what I was trying to get it. It's more of a postponement than an exemption for students. If they wont let you skip your service date they may just postpone it to a date of your choosing.

If city law/state law conflicts with federal law..... agencys will uphold other laws first.

The best example I can say, is the knife law.

Federal law states a knife carried on a person, cannot have a blade that is longer than 3.5 inches.

City of boston law, states a knife carried on a person cannot have a blade that is longer than 2.5 inches.

If a....... federal agent pulls you over in boston he/she will uphold the federal law of 3.5 inches for a knife.

If a boston police officer pulls you over, he/she will uphold the city law of 2.5 inches for a knife....... doesn't matter that federal law states 3.5 inches, city law says otherwise and your in the city the law resides over.

So if the state, or city has a law stating that students do not get exempt from jury service just because they are students.... means that law would be in affect in city/state courts.

I understand what you meant but it's still not entirely accurate. Federal mandates, acts, and provisions must be followed regardless of state laws on the issue. It's likely there are no federal guidelines or mandates regarding the jury duty process considering how it works in MA, but my point was exemptions from jury duty and postponements are not the same, and you can always be granted a postponement if you prove it's needed or simply call them and let them know you're a student.

In NY they are VERY serious about Jury Duty, as it's already been said. I've seen people around here put in jail for not going. Being a student does not get you off, I had to do jury duty 2 years ago and they made me reschedule to a holiday. In the end I just waited 4 hours and they didn't have any trials for us, so we got credit and could leave for the day and don't need to do it again for 8 years I believe?

It's supposedly not as exciting as Law & Order so I would not enjoy an actual trial.

When I got called, they made me sit till the last day, was last summer, and I was excluded from participating in the trial because I told them my major was judicial studies. They wanted people who were ignorant of the law on the trial <3

Seems like the knee-jerk reaction to Jury Duty now is to talk about how much it sucks and then talk to friends about how to get out of it. lol That was my reaction when I had my first summons, anyhow, which was canceled the night beforehand, but I had to report to my most recent. It seems like it's built up as something everyone wants to avoid, but once I realized I had to go it really wasn't as big a deal as I made it out to be aside from waking up super early.

Apparently it's very common that a jury simply being present & waiting will cause a trial to be canceled for a settlement or plea bargain which is what happened to me. I spoke to my mom about it afterward since she worked as a clerk in the court house for years and she said the same occurred all the time with only a few civil/criminal cases ever going to trial.

Mine was a sexual molestation case where 15 minutes prior to my group of jurors being summoned for interview the defendant took a plea bargain of a 20-year minimum sentence. Would've really sucked to sit in on that, but jesus christ that guy must have been guilty as fuck.

The day consisted of watching episodes of that awesome "Planet Earth" series for 3 hours in between magazines and my mp3 player and I think they pay me $10. Also, as far as scheduling conflicts, in my case as long as you gave notice early enough they would reschedule for whenever was convenient as those made up a lot of the phone calls the clerks were fielding while we waited.

Here where I live a cop comes to your house to hand you your jury duty papers so you can never ever say you didn't get them because he'll only give it to the person it's addressed to. I went last nov and it was the dumbest shit ever. This dude got popped breaking into someones house in broad daylight.

Luckly I didn't get picked but I still had to sit in the audience when the state and defense lawyer's kinda explained what the case was about without going into the details until a panel was picked from our pool.

Just go, skipping it only delays it. In 2005 i got out of jury duty so much I would get a new notice every 2 months until I went.
