The quote at the bottom of the Race page on the NA FFXIV site reads:

Besides the hyphen, the naming scheme seems identical.

If you're trying to suggest the information is outdated, it just says that they inhabited, past tense, islands. In the same way that every race other than the Elezen came from somewhere outside of Eorzea, the Lalafell came to the area and chose a specific place to reside once there. Even if that isn't so, islands CAN have plains and dunes.

At any rate, I don't see any other naming conventions represented, so it's the best thing to go on.
