Origins had one of the best opening credits sequence of any movie I've seen.

Too bad the rest of the movie was utter shit.

Also, Joss posted a thing today. http://whedonesque.com/comments/28797

If you think topping a box office record compares with someone telling you your work helped them through a rough time, you're probably new here. (For the record, and despite my inhuman distance from the joy-joy of it: topping a box office record is super-dope. I'm an alien, not a robot.) So this is me, saying thank you. All of you.

X2 > First class but Fassbender > All. First Class was still garbage even with his best efforts to save it.

Come on, at least the music was good! On the Avengers movie I'd be hard pressed to remember any of it, but First Class has Magneto's theme.

Disney has just revealed that The Avengers (aka Avengers Assemble in certain honoured territories) earned another $28.4 million at the international box office on Monday and a further $18.9 million in North America to take its box office past the $700 million mark in just 13 days.

The film’s international box office takings have now reached $475.8 million, with US and Canada earnings now at $226.4 million. That’s a massive total of $702.2 million so far. It looks increasingly likely that the film will sail past the billion dollar barrier.

Even if you take into account the higher priced tickets for IMAX and 3D screenings that’s still a phenomenal tally.

The international box office totals for previous Marvel movies were:

    Iron Man 2 – $623.4 million
    Iron Man – $581.7 million
    Thor – $447.6 million
Captain America: The First Avenger – $368.7 million

A selection of other recent superheroes movies stack up like this:

The Dark Knight – $1.001 billion
    X-Men Origins: Wolverine – $373 million
    X-Men: First Class – $353.2 million
    Green Hornet – $227.8 million
    Green Lantern – $221.9 million
Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance – $132.5 million

So, will it be bigger than The Dark Knight? And could The Dark Knight Rises be even bigger than both? And will Marvel and DC fans be locked in neverending internet forum arguments about inflation, 3D ticket price hikes and bums on seats to prove which was the most successful? And does it matter when, in the end, we’re just getting some damned fine superheroe flicks to watch?

I highly doubt TDKR will be bigger than the Avengers at the box office. The argument that 3D ticket sales inflate the box office numbers does seem to have some validity due to the fact that 52% of the ticket sales for The Avengers was for 3D. When you consider its anywhere from 4-8 bucks more for a 3D presentation it is no wonder it made $200 million. Hell the movie theater I saw it at had it showing on 3 screens; two of which were 3D. With that said, since Chris Nolan doesn't really believe in 3D, I see TDKR making somewhere around $160-170 million opening weekend.

I can see TDKR beating the 200mil but I don't think it will match the disney marketing machine internationally. TDK was lower in the rest of the world too.

Well part of me feels that Disney over marketed the Avengers. There was promotional material out 2-3 months before the movie was due out. I was hyped to see it, but not as much as I am for TDKR because the marketing hasn't picked up yet and to me that is building more hype.

I think half the people who see 3D movies only go because the normal version was sold out.

I don't know if it's been brought up yet, but was anyone else mildly confused at the lack of War Machine in this flick?

It seems like this follows Iron Man 2 chronologically, so it's not as it the War Machine armor hadn't been developed yet. I can understand the filmmakers not wanting to include any character not present in the Avengers' first adventure, but it just doesn't make sense that the planet is about to be subjugated by a god with an alien army, and the Pentagon doesn't send their Iron Man-equivalent to the front lines.

    Not to hijack, but...
James McAvoy was a good, young Prof. X. The beach scene at the end was great. I liked the whole 60s feel to everything. Kevin Bacon was pretty awesome as Sebastian Shaw, even if he didn't have the comic book look. The kids who played Havoc and Banshee were pretty good as well.

The only reason X-2 is better is because they used the God Loves, Man Kills framework which is such an amazing story. That doesnt make First Class garbage though.

Nobody gives a shit about War Machine. Also for some reason, the military wasn't present anywhere in this movie. No tanks, no jets, no nothing. World getting destroyed by aliens, not a single fuck was given.

    Spoiler: show
You can say it was because of the incoming nuke, but that's generally a last ditch effort sort of thing... First response team is pretty much mandatory.

On an unrelated note; I really hope they bring in Warlock for the 2nd movie, otherwise shits gonna be weird.

There's a reason for that actually. The Pentagon denied access to the military because they felt that the Avengers was too unrealistic. They didn't like the fact that SHIELD doesn't answer to the U.S. Government and therefore shouldn't have access to its technology.

On a lighter (and better) note, Disney has already confirmed they're going to produce a sequel.

While this is true, this also has to deal with scheduling and leasing on the theaters part. The AMC I went to only had one screen playing the movie in 2D while two screens were doing 3D. They could have done more 2D screens, but their previous film leases on other movies occupied other screens despite being a 16 screen theater. On the other hand you do have situations like the Edwards not too far from where I work where it's an even split of three in 2D and three in 3D.
