Are.... are you serious? Return of the King SWEPT the Oscars, in all 11 categories it was nominated in, not only to signify how great the trilogy was, but because it was representing all 3 movies as a whole, rather then as 3 individual movies. This is because while the 3 movies were separated in when they were released, they were filmed together over a span of 9 years.

Do you know the only other movies that ever won 11 Oscars in the history of the Oscars? Ben-Hur and Titanic. Grudgingly my ass.

And why are you all talking about best picture of the year already? The Oscars are in March, we're about to hit July. We still got 9 months to go. And seriously, Avengers for best picture? It was a great blockbuster film, absolutely enjoyable popcorn flick on the big screen, but not a great film. Big difference.

Heeeey, slow down there. I know how many Oscars it got. At the time I remember that as it hadn't won anything major the previous years and people were clamouring for it to receive Best Film that year, the Academy, in my opinion, bowed to public opinion. I love the LoTR films so I'm not saying it didn't deserve it.

Why is Avengers not a great film?

Avengers is a great film. I wouldn't say it's Oscar worthy though.

Right, but what exactly is it missing? Honest question, I just don't know what they could have done to make it better, unless we're saying it is absolutely impossible for a superhero movie to get best film.

Are you implying a comic book can't have an epic, powerful story?

Honestly, it's a popcorn flick. The plot isn't the strongest. The acting was decent(though Ruffalo, Downey, and Hiddleston were fantastic) not great. It was a big name special effects extravaganza. Just comparing it to Return of the King, Avengers doesn't cross that threshold into being truly epic. That being said I think that even if it was an Oscar worthy film it would take an act of God for it to actually win. For whatever reason the academy seems to thumb it's nose at most sci-fi/superhero genre films which is truly disappointing.

It was a feel good, explosive, superhero movie. Nothing more, nothing less. It's not impossible for a superhero movie to get an Oscar, just extremely difficult.

Most superhero movies aren't created for the purpose of receiving Oscars unless it's in the effects department. The plots are extremely straightforward, acting is ok.

Idk, maybe it's because I'm thinking of all the Avengers movies as a whole, so in my mind there was a lot more depth and character development than in just this movie by itself. Idk what they could have done better with this movie honestly, tons of great actors that put on a great performance, great interaction between everyone, a great plot that really made you feel for the characters. How many of you saw people fucking bawling in the theaters when coulsen died? It may not have had a big surprise ending or anything, but honestly, not many movies do.

As a stand alone movie, which is how Oscars are awarded, it was an ok movie. If they could have made Coulsen's death as emotional with just one movie instead of 6, it would mean something. You really wouldn't have that big of a connection with the characters if you only saw the Avengers and none of the "prequels", I guess you would call them.

Yep, I can agree with that. Although they did LotRs as 1 giant movie no? But im sure they have already counted the previous marvel movies each year, so it doesn't matter now.

Pretty much this. As a stand alone movie most people wouldn't really bat an eyelash at Coulsen dying. But because we've seen him in numerous movies now he became a familiar face.

I can't in good conscience compare the Lord of the Rings and the Avengers. I loved the Avengers and I'll be picking it up day one when it comes out on blu ray. But there is simply no way it belongs in the same sentence or train of thought as LoTR.

No, each LoTR was judged on it's own merit. As individual movies they were outstanding.

Weird, I thought someone sad a few posts ago that it was all judged as one giant movie when they swept the awards.

Yeah someone did post that. I just ignored it lol. I think what he meant was that the academy made up for the shunning of the first two movies by awarding the third one with all the awards it received.

That person was wrong. It's not a cumulative award.

lol you keep telling yourself that. The Academy is notorious for rewarding something/someone if they have been previously left out. Thats not to say Return of the King didn't deserve the awards, but it was also the academy making up for snubbing the first two films.
