I saw this when the movie first came out; I love the layout of their floors. It doesn't seem random.

Thor, the only Avenger with the natural ability to fly is at the top floor, followed by Clint, who prefers heights. Then comes Cap, placing him as close to the middle as possible with easy access to his entire team, and directly below him Tony, who just enjoys being at the center of things. Natasha presumably likes having more options for an exit strategy and could do so from closer to the ground. Banner's at the bottom (maybe even underground), presumably in case of Hulking accidents, or just because he too is used to needing more than one exit strategy available to him.

Two ways to see this, IMO: According to Whedon, there are plenty of characters he's killed off that came back for whatever bullshit reason he could come up with (what up, Spike in season 5 of Angel, wtf?), despite his reputation for killing off people. (Though to be fair, Coulson's death wasn't his idea, it was ordered by Kevin Feige.) Not to mention, he's playing on Marvel's playground, and everyone keeps coming back to life in every Marvel universe out there. Not to mention Coulson just made his entrance in the comic books (and in 616 to boot). Then there's the Coulson Lives campaign, even if I personally don't think it will amount to anything.

On the other hand, Coulson surviving would cheapen the entire movie, since his death is what bands them together. I think any re-introduction of Coulson would have to be done carefully, and I hate the idea of him coming back as Vision. Coulson's Coulson, or bust.
