You're an idiot. I've stated many times in other threads of my being frustrated with the priest situation and I've also given what I think the church needs to do about it. Equally, I've done my research and made sure that the church I go to doesn't have any recorded child-molester priests.

If one came out of doing so, I would switch to a new church.

The thing is, most normal Catholics aren't touched by the pedophilia shit (no pun intended) - you either had a priest who touched little kids (not many people percentage-wise) or you didn't - while the coverups are fucked up completely, obviously - they have little to do, honestly, with the everyday parishioner if it's not in your diocese.

Maybe it's an anomaly, but I grew up Catholic (my dad was an altar boy pre-Vatican II, etc.) and my parents still practice, and I never heard anyone talking about the Pope really...ever. The child molestation stuff is terrible and is reflective of really backwards priorities (and a lack of understanding about how badly children are hurt by molestation) but when it comes down to it, it's a correctable part of the culture of Catholic hierarchy.

The things that are fucked up about Scientology are the norms, not the aberrations. They aren't things that Scientologists see as wrong or needing correction.

Discouraging condom use in AIDS-ravaged Africa is really fucked up though - but again, it's an example of the disconnect that everyday parishioners feel from the Vatican (in my experience.)
