    PS3 isn't reading disks.

I'm not sure what exactly is the problem. Was playing FFXIII and the thing just froze on me after loading back onto the world map from a battle. Gave it a chance and left it sit there for about an hour until I just decided to PS Button > Quit Game. Now my PS3 isn't reading any disk at all, DVD, Blu-Rays, other games, absolutely nothing. Goes in normally, blue light comes up but nothing happens, I don't hear it trying to read the disk either.

Any clue on what could be the issue? Tried blowing out the vents and cleaning the lens, still doesn't work.

Evidently there is an issue with quite a few people where FF13 is overworking the PS3 lazer and destroying it. As far as I know there isn't a known fix yet and most people have been having to send in their consoles to be fixed or replaced. =\

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAU3WpRn9mc - Youtube video explaining the problem since that other thread is like 40 pages long.

I had one of those FFXIII freezes and afterwards my HDMI port was dead, thought it was just a coincidence, but am less sure as time goes on.

most likely double layer BD fucked the lens.

Warranty -> Send it back to Sony.
None -> Test the lens and repair it yourself... $60 for a lens iirc.

W/o a doubt it's the laser. Call Sony, they'll tell you to do some restores, and hopefully that will work for you.

It worked for a few days, but eventually died. I have the 60 gig so the rep gave me these options:

    • Pay 170 bucks plus tax. Get it repaired or a similar model if it can't.
    • Pay 150 I believe and get a refurb. slim.

I told the rep. that was highway robbery and told him no thanks. I ordered the laser myself, replaced it and now it's fixed (knock on wood it will keep working 4ever). If you have that model and you decide to fix it yourself, feel free to ask. I became an expert doing that shit (received 2 DoA lasers). Good luck!

    The laser was 65 shipped.

    Check out this youtube video.

I was going to get FFXIII for my PS3 but after seeing that video i linked, it was definately not happening. Hopefully we can download FFXIV straight to the hard drive of our PS3 and don't have to keep the disc in because i just don't trust any PS3 discs Square Enix makes at this point.

I don't think it's FFXIII that is causing the problems per se, rather the amounts of time the laser is being used. Yes, install it will minimize the usage; and therefore, it will last a lot longer.

So there's no correlation with models? Did that patch that came out that makes other OS's unusable fix this?

edit: Someone's building a case against Sony or Square Enix according to the forums the contact e-mail they had was [email protected]

Ahhh, the good'ol PS2 days. I'm seconding the notion of just replacing the laser yourself. It's not that difficult at all. You just need to know/understand english and have patience.

Going to try the Rebuild Database option from the hidden startup menu after I save all my PS3 info onto my laptop. If that doesn't work then I guess its replace laser time. Never done it before but looking through a few youtube videos it doesn't seem to be much of a hassle. Got the fatboy 60gig model, I wanted to have real backwards compatibility was the mentality behind the purchase. I don't see why it would be a console issue though, I played the hell out of Uncharted 2 for hours on end and nothing even remotely close like this happened.

EDIT: Just realized, any way to send save files from your ps3 to your pc?

Wish I had known about this with FFXIII before-hand, would've just stopped playing after I finished the game. Fucking bullshit if you ask me, I can hookup my damn SNES and play the shit out of it even til this day.

Why was this moved from gaming to tech? This is something the players actually have to know about and it would reach the largest audience there. No one that has a PS3 issue is going to read tech <,<

edit: i'm retarded and it probably was in tech the entire time >,>

Well that didn't work. Guess I'll have to replace the damn laser.

EDIT: So pissed about this bullshit. Anyone have any suggestions on what laser to buy? Not quite sure which one I need.

This issue is not exclusive to just FF. It's happened to me before with other games. Typically it's an issue found on the older versions of the Ps3. You'll have no choice but to send it to sony to have it repaired as I had to. It seems like every new game I play on my ps3 makes the laser clunk up and it doesn't ruin the disks but the machine sounds so bad.

Just send it to sony because I don't think it's an easy swap and it might be more than the laser. It'll have to be diagnosed with the right gear.

Use an external harddrive. I did that for my PS3 saves when I sent it to Sony in December.

As for the repair options with Sony, it's roughly $180 total. They do fix up the PS3 damn well though (My PS3 had A LOT more issues than laser breakdowns and they cleaned out the dust + fixed the cover). I plan on getting FFXIII in the future, so I was wondering if someone without *any* experience with these kind of fixes would be able to change the laser properly.

Edit: I too have the old PS3 version (20GB).

We had this happen to our PS3 long long before XIII came out - was MGS4 that killed ours as I recall, but at that point it was under warranty so we got a fix outta Sony pretty quickly.

Apologies for semi-necrobumping this but what's a trustworthy laser I can buy to replace the one in my PS3? Looked through a few but not sure which one to get.
